Hi Free

If you look around on this bd...search...etc...you'll see many different brands OF being used...pros/cons/opinions.

My 99 4.6L (33000) has had an engine (clicking) noise for a long time...finally used up a big supply of FRAM OF...so i just got a Mcraft FL820S.

Could not believe how much quieter my engine is. No longer sounds like a "mini diesel" on cold/warm start ups/ideling etc.

I found reports/test on Mcraft...not a bad filter at all for $3.00 JMO!
Certainly better than the FRAM. But...you have to decide.

Good luck...OT

I recently switched from K&N to a Fl-820S, too for that same reason (clicking noise). Can't go wrong with the Motorcraft filter!
Lots of good filters out there, but why pay the money when the FL is just as good.

Good Brands:

K&N
Motorcraft
Amsoil
Mobile 1

It's mainly up to personal preference.

I use Mobil 1 but just about anything other than Fram is good. Really comes down to personal preference.

Hi Free

You may already know about this...one question leads to another and sometimes easier this way than new thread.

Galaxy If you see this...nice pic. Nice fittings. Sure makes for an easier oil change eh!

Question...i have same up front but OEM...filter is horizontal..your filter is vertical...Do you have any opinion horizontal VS vertical..Maybe its just the differences in mfg. design? Mobil one appears longer than mcraft? Ive never looked at them before.

Tks....OT

I use Mobil One on both the new Explore and my truck. Mobil One #M1-210, I see in your pictures Galaxy that you are using the M1-301, I take it this is an aftermarket remote filter adapter?

Galaxy,

i have got to say that is the SWEETEST setup I've seen!! I checked out their site this afternoon. I would love to find out exactly which parts you used for that. If you don't mind me asking, what was the price. Of course as the old saying goes.........If you have to ask....

Thanks,

John

Don't let the $2-$3 fool ya, Motorcraft filters are good!

However, I use Amsoil. Was using Mobil 1 but it was easier to just orderan Amsoil filter while ordering oil etc. Plus Amsoil is about one of the best filters based on several tests. I think the primary thing is more capacity to store filtered "crud" and a superior anti-drainback valve.

The after market remote kit uses a larger filter. I have a Perma-Cool remote kit mounted just like galaxy does and i also use the Mobil1 M1-301 Filter. It's the same size as the Motorcraft FL-1A.

Hey guys, thanks for all the compliments on the filter. It is not a kit so to speak. I pieced it together myself and total cost with filter was right around $200. Here's the post that I did when I first finished and it should cover everything including parts list and how I installed it. Thanks again.

Fleas, why do you use a FRAM oil filter? After seeing several used oil filters vs what they look like new at a display they had at autozone, i would not put a FRAM oil filter in my truck ever, which i never have anyway. They use cardboard for a couple different gaskets in the filter. What happens over a little time when that light cardboard gets hit over and over by hot oil? You figure it out!
There wasnt much gasket material left at all. Just what i saw, each to his own i guess.

Fram makes more than one type of filter. The old cheap Fram filters with the cardboard insides are the ones to avoid. I believe the one Flea is useing (the PH2) is the new one they are now offering that costs about twice as much and is a considerably better quality filter (that is built more like the Mobil1's on the inside.) Personally, I use either the Motorcraft or Mobil1.

Old Timer, My kit is an aftermarket add on and as far as I know, none of the kits (Perma-Cool, TD Performance, Peterson Fluid Sys, etc) make a filter base that will accept the stock FL-820 type filter. They all require the FL-1A or equivalent type filter. That's fine with me since it's a little bigger and now I run 6 1/2 qt's instead of 6 just due to the increase in filter size.

As for verticle or horizontal, I would have to say verticle just because the oil will not run out when it's sitting around. The filter always stays full. And you can fill the filter first on your oil change without it running everywhere when you put it on. This is not a big factor if you're using a good filter with a good anti-drain back valve but it helps. IMO. Also, since my filter is an aftermarket, I could have mounted it where ever I wanted to. I wasn't necessairily shooting for something close to where they were on the trucks from the factory, just went with what worked well for me.
