PS issue and 4.6L questions

Hi Everyone,

I tried a search for this information, but none of it seemed to apply, so here goes...

I bought my wife an '01 Expy brand new in August 2001. Aside from really, really bad gas mileage (12-13 mpg) and lack of power (for me ), it has been an excellent vehicle. Comfortable, quiet, tons of room, etc. About a month or so ago, it started clattering, knocking, etc real bad at startup. Sounds like an old diesel engine. The noise goes away after 5 mins or so (when the engine warms up). Is this piston slap?? If so, here's the kicker, my engine code (from the VIN) is W (Romeo)!! Plus, it's a 2001 model year. Any ideas, opinions.

Also, I have seen two different horsepower ratings. What is the true rating for an '01 4.6L? Should be 215 hp / 290 tq., right?

Thanks, y'all!!

I could be wrong, but I think the "W" ( Eight letters/numbers from the left in the VIN) stands for Windsor, you can also tell by your valve cover bolt arrangment. I have the same year 4.6 w/ the same deisel sound. It sounds worse with a K&N OIL filter( just switched back to the FL820S). I think it's just an inherent trait of our engine ( so they say at the dealership). Performance is not affected in my application. I'm not worried about it; I've taken my truck through the Sierra Nevada Mountians on several occasions with no problem. I have an extended warrenty though.

When in doubt, check it out!

Eigth Digit in the Vin
W = Romeo
6 = Windsor

Couldn't be easier right?
