Piston slap again. Need help.

Well they diagnosed my truck with piston slap after having it for the weekend. Dealer is talking with Ford about a solution and word is either a remanned FQR by Fred Jones (if I have my terminology right) or maybe an extended warranty out to 100k (my suggestion). I have 35500 miles and I knew what it was but thought I ought to get it checked before warranty expired. Does anybody know if Fred Jones remanufactured motors are quality or should I stick with the otherwise good motor I have and maybe get an extended warrranty?

First, I just want to say that I have 98K miles on my piston slap 4.6 and it runs like a champ, could use a little more bottom end though.

To try and answer your question. Does your truck run good other than the piston slap issue, you need to think about that. Some of these sevice people have a way of screwing things up on big jobs like this. What kind of warrenty will come with the new/reman engine? I think it should be 36K miles, after all it was 36K when you bought the truck. Your idea to take the warrenty out to 100K sounds good if you want to keep your engine.

I haven't read anything bad resulting from piston slap, and being a piston slap victim for about 60K miles I haven't delt with anything negitive from the PS other than I can't stand the noise when I crank up cold.

I also believe that if there is a problem with these engines and Ford is making good for it, it should be right, after all, we did pay $25-$35K for these trucks.

What would I do? Well if my truck was running good, the noise wasn't loud and they only offered me 12 month/12K mile warrenty, I would keep my motor, I know what I have. On the other hand, if they offered me a 3yr/36K mile warrenty I would go with the replacement engine. This is based on my PS problem. It made itself known at about 35-37K miles.

I don't know if I answered your question, but I hope I gave you something to think about that would help you deside.

Cool

I would think twice about getting a 'new' engine. The work involved with replacing an engine in these trucks is extensive. I've heard of taking off the fenders and basically the whole front clip...which opens up a big can of worms. And chances are good that the replacement will make noise as well. These engines work fine with this PS thing and as far as I know has not been the cause of one engine failure. BUT...I can see how when you spend alot of money on these things you want it perfect, or darn close. Also, as long as you have it documented with a dealership under warranty you should be ok if the engine does go ***** up.

Dammm..... Remove the front clip. If that's the case, and the work goes that deep, I think that I would deffinitly keep my PS engine. I would see if I would be able to extend the warrenty though. Removing the front clip, would that be due to the fact that the engine is under the cowl?

Do you know this for a fact about pulling the engine?

Just think about the possibilities, scratches on your sheet metal that wasn't there and they say were, missing bolts, new rattles ect......

What happened to the good ol' days, when you just unbolted the tranny, some hoses and a few wires.
