This has me baffled!

Earlier this week I was driving to work and just as I hit the back gate I noticed the oil pressure had dropped off and the light came on along with the water temp light. I didn't here anything different in the engine, pulled over after I got through the gate and checked the water and oil. Everything was where it needed to be. I started driving again and the oil pressure gauge tried reading again. After the truck sat for a couple of hours, I checed the oil and coolant again. Both were in the normal range. I started the truck and everything went back to normal.

Today (just two days later) I had the same thing happen. Iwas like deja voo. The only difference was that I had different clothes on.

If any one has a clue, let me know so I can solve this mystery!

sounds like an electrical problem....the oil pressure gauge is essentially an idot light on/off operation..... doesn't read pressure ...with both gauges going whacky...im thinkin' electrical..your engine should be o.k. ....get it checked ..it's still under warrenty ..correct?

Warranty was up 30k mile ago. This is a 97 4.6L. This will suck if I have to put money toward this, it will take away from the mod money. (pun intended)

They Both maybe tied to the same ground wire. I have had other "idiot lights" go off in some of my other vehicles. Since they were under warrenty I took them in and the repair guys always told me there was a loose ground.

Good Luck

If there is actually an oil pressure problem, then the computer should store the code for it. If you have an Autozone near by, go see them and ask them to use the code reader and see if it shows anything.

Additionally, if your oil pressure is suddenly dropping off, you will notice that the engine sounds very DIFFERENT. Oil starvation will make for very noisy bearings (very unsettling). If it lasts for more than 2-3 seconds. Shut down immediately. You could have some crap in the oil pan getting sucked up into the oil pump intake screen and blocking flow. This will certainly cause oil pressure to drop.

Bottom line is, if the oil pressure is dropping off you will be able to hear it. Don't ignore it.

Bob,

Like ROUSHFAN-1 said it seems like an electrical problem. Have you done any modifications like a new radio etc. lately. Someone posted a way to test the panel. Not sure where I saw it, but you turn the ignition on while holding in the trip button. If I find it I will post it. Good luck.

Pete

That happened to me, too, but the radio/time display, which never worked before, came back to life. Turned out to be something wrong with the electric. I would like to tell you what, but I'm at loss for the right words.

Stay away from the back gate!! Aliens have landed and hidden their craft. You may be invading their electric force field! Give them time to rejuvinate their power supply and launch safely.

You think I'm kidding? Oh you just wait and see.....

(Geez, I need to get out and get some fresh air....)

Well Familyride, you may be more right than you know. I haven't seen them personally, but the back gate leads to Robins AFB, GA. Something more to think about...

Silent Bob,
You are not alone. This seems to me to be happening more on the 97 and 98 trucks.
