4.6 info
I'm still a newbe to the F-150 scene, and have a mod list a mile long. But one thing that I really want to know is something about the 4.6.
Are the 4.6's in our trucks sharing the block with Mustang GT's and Cobras?
I have been pondering this for a while, because I want more power out of my SCrew, without going to a 5.4. I'd like to either convert my engine to a Cobra specs, or swap in a Cobra motor.
Hopefully, you more knowedgable members can help me out!
TIA

Can't you just replace the heads on the 4.6 with the DOHC ones off of a mustang? I was kinda wanting to know the same thing as you ScrewFly. If you find some good performance mods for your 4.6 that really up the hp , let me know. I am pondering on rebuilding mine and wanting to know what parts to go with.

That is exactly what I want to do. I keep seeing the parts on Ebay, and I know it'd be a nice power jump. Especially with some aftermarket cams and such.
I just want to power to spin my planned 35's at will. And the more, the better!

How hard and expensive is the conversion from SOHC to DOHC??
Doing this can you get the power out of our 4.6L like the new cobras are? (taking into account that you also add a blower)

Thats exactly what i want, power to spin the 315's (35's) i have.
How much are you looking to spend on performance mods? I am thinking about rebuilding mine, and then saving up for a supercharger. But , let me know if you have any other ideas. Email me at joel.leibold@starband.net We'll stay in touch so we can figure out some good mods.

1999+ modular Mustang GT's are all 4.6L SOHC motors. They are not Duals. Wether or not we share the same block as the GT is beyond me, but I know for a fact that the new GT's are SOHC's.
The Cobra is a 32 Valve DOHC motor.

I believe that all the 4.6 Mustang GT's were SOHC, the Cobra being the only DOHC Mustang. I don't know about the Roush, but the Saleen is the SOHC too.
Just one thing I think about when I ponder wether Mustang parts would work on our trucks. Though there are some pretty smart, progressive people here, there are people who would have seen the potential to make money and figured this out already. I think that although we share the dissplacement, form follows function wich would lead me to believe that there will be slight variations.
If I'm way off and you folks find a way to make it work, let me know. I too would like MORE POWER!
Good luck!

I would think that with complexity of head/engine swaps being a big factors, many have chosen to go the SuperCharger route for adding big HP.
I may be wrong but can't see why someone would want to spend several thousand dollars on DOHC heads, intake and exhaust. Then go through all the work that it would be to do the swapping and end up with a 300HP 4.6L engine when you could easily gain 80+ HP in a weekend by installing a SuperCharger Kit, Much as you chose to do Tom

I had a 96 Mustang GT and it was a 4.6 SOHC set up only the Cobras have the DOHC set up. I'm sure many of the parts are the same. I think the heads and intake are a few of the differnces between the GT engine and the one in our trucks.
Aren't the Mustangs geared, and their heads designed for high RPM? Something that sounds good until you consider that trucks need power down in lower RPM ranges, in order to get them moving. Mustangs weigh MUCH less than these trucks, so they don't need as much low end like we do. If I'm off base, someone let me know

there are 2 types of 4.6 SOHC engines, they have minor differences & most parts are interchangable. There is the Romeo plant engines ( cars ) & Windsor 4.6/5.4 ( Trucks ) engines.
In '99 & '00 they used the truck engines in the stangs.
In the stangs they had the pre'99 heads that were crappy & lower lift cams.
Then they have the '99/00 PI heads that as far as I know are EXACTLY the same as the 4.6/5.4 trucks, same cams everything.
Now they have the Romeo PI heads that are almost the same but have the oil filler on the driver's side & a different cover bolt pattern, the heads are interchangeable though & have the same cams.
The DOHC heads will bolt up to the SOHC iron block.
But it has not been done extensively

The '03 Cobra has the DOHC heads on an iron block, I have not heard if they changed anything to make the union any better.
