Cold Air intakes! Are they worth it!
Cold Air intakes! Are they worth it!
Are these mods worth the 200 - 300 dollars they are priced at! I am very unsure on if I should get one and if I do which one would be the best for me! I have looked at the Volant and K&N and the Air Force -1 and the MAC! but they all say the samething and promise big HP gains! although when I check out posts they talk about only 2hp gains and some guys testing thier trucks on a Dyno with thier truck parked. What I want to know is has anyone tested thier truck while driving down the road with more air going into the engine than there would be parked! People who have these products installed on thier trucks please let me know if they are worth thier price and the time needed to install them!

None of those mods (chip, intake, exhaust) will give you such a difference that will make you crap your pants, but each provides a small noticeable improvement.
However, once you get all 3 working together, then you will feel a nice boost.
From my personal experience, I believe the most gains came from the exhaust, then chip, the FIPK.
It's really hard for me to tell scientifically tho, because the exhaust was last, and ya, I felt a very big gain, but some of that gain has to be attributed to the fact that now the chip, intake and exhaust is all working together more efficiently.
You will notice a small gain from each, but nothing to write home about. Others on here may differ with my opinion, but as I said, this is just my opinion.
Is it worth it? It all depends how hard you work for your money, lol
Sorry I couldnt be more help.

I did the the mods in this order from stock...
FIPK - lost a LOT of low end gained some up high, but if this is the only mod your going to do I dont recomend it, talk about a dog
Exaust - gained a little of my low end back, not as much as stock, but with the added mid and the high my FIPK gave me it was bearable, still not the screeming six banger that I know the 4.2 could be.
Performance Chip - This is where things got interesting, the chip improved the entire curve, brought my low end back to a little better then stock and mad things downright violent when I stomped on it, so far its the best mod for my money. Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I can sqeal (SP?) the tires now with auto and 3.55 LS, couldnt do that before
Underdrive Pullies and Electric fans - Next on mod list
3.90 Gears - Dont want the 4.10's, too low for my highway driving, Mabey next year.
You have to put this in perspective though, its a 4.2 v6, its never going to have the power that you can get with a v8, for a 6 its pretty damn good, compared to a v8, its laughable.

air intake
in my opinion............ yes the air intake did help. I dont see how adding more aie would hurt your low end performance. I also did the exhaust. They both helped. The truck seemed a little more responsive after each.
Like others have said, the "three" are the best way to go. Any one of the "three", chip, intake and exhaust will help performance. The three together will allow your truck to run the way it should.
You will end up spending upwards of a grand on the three and will not see earth shattering results. You will feel the results! If you want earth shattering results, plan on spending at least three times as much. Even then there still can be the desire for more.
If you are like many of us here, who just can't afford to drop huge amounts of cash, it's ok to do the mods one at a time. Like others have said, you may feel some decreases because the three together make a more complete system.
I'd say it's worth it, if you plan on doing additional mods. If not, there are cheaper was to get more air.
