Nav or Cobra Engine?
Nav or Cobra Engine?
Calling all you guys who know about conversions! What am I able to fit up with an auto tranny from my 4.6 and not bust its 8.8 rear end? I was really hoping to upgrade to a nice 32 valve 4.6, I have heard about the nicer heads on the nav engines also. I would like to keep my 8.8 rear if I could but thats only because I have some 4:10 gears I havent used yet. Any ideas?
Yeah I can weld, but I wasnt looking to do the swap my self. I have seen all sorts of engines dropped in but Im trying to avoid replacing the trany and rear end so that the cost stays around 5k or so. If I replaced everything id be looking at around 9k or so which isnt worth it to me. I would just buy a new truck instead. Im at the 50k mark on my mileage so I figured I would replace it with something "unusual" instead of selling her when she hits around 70k.
The blocks will bolt right up. The problem comes with the electronics and I am sure it involves more then just swapping out the computer. For one thing, the twin cam heads have duel plemiums that are electronically operated. I think the cost of switching would be much prohibitive.
It would be less money to bolt on a supercharger. The centrifugal type superchargers should not be a problem with the transmission and 8.8 rear since the horsepower increase is progressive. Also the install will be much easier since the kits themselves are complete bolt on and are highly engineered.
Whenever you add horsepower, you put more stress on the drive train so you never know what might break.

You dont think its too late for a blower? I wasnt sure if it was a great idea at 50k miles. That of course would be the cheap way to go though. When does the boost kick in on those centrifugal charges? I have heard they dont do anything for you off the line, which would hinder what I had in mind for 1/4 mile times. I was hoping to get into the high 13's if I can. Im sure the 4:10 gearing will help off the line some for sure though.
My parts:
JBA Headers ( already have)
2 Borla mufflers (dont know which though)
4:10 (already have)
Superchip
Aluminum Pullies
Electric fans
and some sort of blower at about 9lbs I guess. ( I kinda like the kenne bell ones even though they are the roots type. maybe a vortech s-trim instead?)
Think thats enough for high 13s? Im on 20" wheels which might weigh me down a bit. I have removed the rear bumper (rollpan now)and spare tire though anyhow. Let me know what you think, thanks

Out of all the superchargers, the ATI = the fastest 1/4 mile times. It does not help you off the line, but it does build up to make 9psi of intercooled boost. For strictly having a fast 1/4 mil truck, the ATI is the best way to go. And you are fine with 50k miles. I wouldnt worry about your engine until 110k+. Goto the supercharger section and ask Crash, he will tell you everything you need to know.
BTW a Kenne-Bell is not a roots blower, its a Twin-Screw, which is more efficient and puts out cooler air than a roots. Thats why they dont require an intercooler. Go for the ATI though.

Do they make a kenne bell for a SOHC 4.6? Do I need to worry about any kind of excess wear with 9lbs? The last thing I need is to throw a rod or something seriouse like that. Thanks for the info
