Question Engines

I recently purchased an '02 F-150 Supercrew. The window sticker claimed 14 MPG in the city and 17 MPG on the highway. On my first tank of gas I got 11 MPG in the city ( I know, I know, it wasn't yet broken in), on the road I was getting 15 MPG. At 3,300 miles on the clock I installed the K&N FIPK and a Pro-Flo dual exhauxt and am now getting 15 MPG in the city. Here is the dillema, I still get 15 MPG on the highway (with the cruise set at 78 miles per hour). I really thought I would do better on the highway! Would anyone care to comment as to why I am getting the same gas mileage in the city as I do on the highway. I'm not complaing about the equipment mods as the truck breathes much better and has significantly better throttle response, I'm simply puzzled at the identical fuel mileage between city and highway driving.

Well the 78 mph would be a good guess

My 02 gets about 12.5 in the city and 16 on the highway
That's with:
AF1
Gibson Supertruck &
Diablo

It was much worse before that.
These trucks like to suck the gas I guess.

You will hear fantastic stories about people pulling their 40 foot houseboat up through the BC mountains, and claiming 19 MPG.
Uh huh...
Anyway, take the stories with a grain of salt.

Yeah, the 78 would be a clue. Also is this truck 2WD or 4WD? If it is a 4WD that's great mileage for a truck as heavy as the Super Crew.

78 is pushing it if you are expecting fuel mileage out of a truck. For reference, I do best at around 70-72 mph - but I have the 4.6, 2wd, cap on the bed, 3:08 gearing, and small tires for low rolling resistance. My '99, on the other hand does much better somewhere lower than that - just haven't had it long enough to say where that is yet.

Oh - and i'd wait till well after 5,000 miles to call the engine somewhat broken in!

I think the numbers are as follows: at 75 mph you are burning 18% more fuel then you would be burning at 65 mph. ( in the CA. DMV manual)

If you are running you a/c the mileage will drop, too.

If you have gears other than 308's or 355's you will hog more gas.

The best thing to do is be conservative with the petro-pedal.

Goody lucky
