Hi silverjpm17
Welcome to the board, There are many modifications available for our trucks. One of the first modifications most people do is an after air intake and second is a new exhaust system. There are computer chips, shift kits, headers, electric cooling fans, and the list goes on. Look at my signature below, you can see what i have done to my truck so far, with more to come.
I hope this helps you out. If you have more questions just ask.
Larry.

Welcome to the boards!!
Well, you'll get a lot of opinions but I'll bet this will be the most popular.
1) Superchip. Best bang for the buck, and you'll love driving your truck.
2) Good Cat back exhaust. I love my Gibson Swept Side.
3) FIPK or good airbox mod.
Those 3 together are probably the best 3 to start with. You can take some further like the exhaust; you can do headers, custom jobs etc. but a good cat back will probably get you the most from scratch.
All in all, if you do the installation all all of it (and they're pretty easy) that will take only about $600 to $800. It depends if you get the exhaust done and if you get an FIPK like the Airaid (about $200 for Airaid or K&N, about $240 for AF1).
That's a good start....if you want to do performance mods. If you want to do suspension, rear anti-sway bar (like Helwig) and shocks. Shocks are a toss up. Rancho's, Edelbrock IAS, Bilstien are probably the top 3 for very good shocks. Rancho may be a favorite. Look in Suspensions for a lot of shock posts.
If you want to spend money on your truck, this is the right place to start. We'll have your wallet empty and you truck "Sweet" before you know it. We've all been there...

The s-chip adds about 20-35 horses for around $200-$250. It changes the fuel curve and ignition timing for the ultimate power. If you prefer some exterior mods before performance, try out WWW.TA4L.COM - they have awesome stuff at crazy prices... it's where I got my b-gard and rollbar

As stated, Superchip will get you about 12-12% gain in HP and torque. An equal or better benefit is much improved shift charactoristics.
The best thing to do is post in Computer Chips or call Mike Troyer directly. He's a Superchip dealer here on the boards. He's very knowledgable. The Superchip simply replaces data tables to retune via the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). Superchip has a great standard program, but they can tweak and tune for you if you'd like.
These Ford modular engines have a lot of potential that Ford doesn't unleash out of the box. Well, I guess they do unleash to a point with the Lightning.
