Post F*ing 5.4l ignition setup

OK,

This just sucks. i have a 2000 expedition with the 5.4L and i have 37k on the odometer. at about 20k the #4 coil went bad and ford replaced it along with the spark plug and wire. now i am having the same problems. under acceleration there is a suddering feeling and it is really annoying. I know this is another misfireing cylinder. i have not replaced the plugs or wires yet. should i? if yes then what does everyone reconmend? second, is there any aftermarket ignition system availible for this truck. i hate this coil pack stuff. i really need some advise before i go to the dealer and have them replace everything with FoMoCo crap.

I had a similar problem. The heater hose clamp where the rubber hose attaches to the pre-formed steel tube just above the right bank of cylinders was leaking. After the vehicle was parked, a slight amount of coolant would seep out and drip onto the last 2 coils. This seepage resulted in the cracking of the rear most coil pack and the rusting and deterioration of those sparkplugs. Also, one of my rubber boots split at the bottom. There are no real "spark plug wires" as such, and the rubber boots are not available seperately. New coil packs are about $46 from the dealer (I now have a new spare). Check for coolant leaks, then clean and inspect the coil packs. If the engine will consistently misfire for about 2 minutes, it will set a code on the OBD II system which can then be used to pinpoint the exact cylinder.

Thanks for the tip. I would think that the dealer would have fixed the leak issue the first time. i will check it out.

so from what i have read i should replace the plugs with a platinum plug and i am thinking of replacing the coil packs on the rear 2 pass side cylinders and then i should be happy.

What does everyone think about this idea?

thanks

I also had the #4 coil replaced
I did notice that they put a better
(worm) clamp on the heater hose when the coil was replaced.

Cool

SCOTTY,
IF ITS THE SAME COIL PACK AS BEFORE FORD MAY REPLACE THE THING FOR NOTHING????? SINCE ITS A REOCCURING PROBLEM WITH THE SAME ITEM.
THEN AGAIN MAYBE NOT. IT WONT HURT TO CALL THEM. ALSO CHANGE ALL THE CHEAP HOSE CLAMPS WITH QUAILTY ONES. ESPECIALLY THE ONE THAT RUN OVER THE COIL PACKS. THERE I ONE DIRECTLY OVER THE #4 COIL (REAR PASSANGER CYLINDER). GOOD LUCK

just thought you might like to know, i had the same problem with mine and i took it to the shop and the sercice advisor knew exactly what was wrong. i called ford and told them and they fixed it for free. at 54,000 miles. they had to put on a new heater hose and new coil and plug.i guess its a common problem.
