Question Problem starting? help!

I think it has something to do with the air conditioner but you guys can tell me better Im sure.

Ok, when I get in my truck and try to start it (either morning or right after 8 hours of being at work) it fires up and then sputters out. This will happen over and over unless I give it some gas and keep the revs up.
Now, yesterday I turned off my air as it was sputtering out and it jumped to life like it should. This morning however the air trick didnt work, I had turned it off prior to starting her up and it didnt help. I had to gas it untill I was out of my drive way before it would settle down. I feel like Im murdering my truck when this happens and dont want to cause any damage. One of the times I reved it it made a scarey clunk sound before it leveld off. Any ideas guys?

I'd start with your IAC (idle air control) valve. A/C shouldn't really have anything to do with it.

I agree with V10man all the way. Have some one tap on it while you first start it. If it is at fault then this will probably clear it up for a while.

Glad to hear that cleaning the IAC fixed it but the AC does play a part in this story.
When you turn the AC on it puts strain on the motor and pulls the RPM's down. The computer will then sense this and send a signal to the IAC to speed things up. I've seen as much as a 500 RPM change when activating my AC.

This is exactly what my truck is doing as well. I was told to replace the TPS and it made no difference at all. Where do I need to look to find the IAC?

Thanks
Robby

Take off the plastic cover, its the silverish cylinder with the plug in it. Its held on by 2 bolts and the plug. Its next to the throttle body, to the right of it when you look strait at it. Use carb cleaner spray and some q-tips , dont go crazy and get pieces of q-tip stuck in there though. That would be a bitch to get out if you did. (make sure you take it off the truck!) I also used a compressor to blow out the excess cleaner spray. Put it back on and fire her up!

Hmm that sounds like the Throttle Postion sensor I replaced. When I put it on I noticed that it really didnt move at all when the throttle moved. Maybe I replaced the right thing, it isnt working. I should know better then go to autozone for parts.....
And when I slow down I too am getting this terrible clunk from my transmission.

The IAC also has a 3/4 diameter rubber hose attatched that goes to the intake system. You could find that hose at the intake and follow it back to the IAC.

Are you sure there's a hose to the IAC? I just checked my 4.6, there's no hose going into the IAC. There's a hose right next to it. Just for notes on the 4.6 the IAC sits on top of the TB elbow right above the TPS.
I'm pretty sure the 5.4 is the same way.
