Johnny Lightning ram air kit for reg. F150 reveiw!!!!
The instructions are just ok in my book, for someone who isn't mechanicly inclined you may be going..HUH!! The parts themselves are ok, I found I had to clean out the tube, there was some junk in there, plus I painted the inside. While installing it I wound up scraping off some of the nice finish on the tube.I had to cut away more of the inner fender plastic than I thought I would have had too, even the directions made me belive I was just trimming out a notch.I actually cut the plastic along the top side of the tube across the whole lenght of the inner fender, and then put the trimmed off part back in its original position, using the push darts, after I trimmed it to fit along the bottom of the tube. using a cable tie, I pulled the bottom of the fender liner from lower inside to the JL ram air mount(at power steering pump bolts) to secure it.The scoop will not go below the lower valance of either a 4X2 or 4X4 bumper, the tube places it right behind.I have the fog light kit on my 2 wheeler, and it comes with the lower bumper valance from a 4 wheeler. I don't have the tow hooks, and the valance is closed in that area, so with a razor blade I carefully cut out the tow hook holes, there is line to follow so its no big deal. The scoop lands right behind the opening. and I secured it in place.I just ran the flex hose into the airbox, eliminating the stock inlet and grommet assy.I will get a fernco adapter to finish it off. It took a moderate amount of engineering nad fabrication to install, its no "Bolt in" kit.I think it was priced a little high for what you get.Well, I hope you don't think I don't like it, I do!!. I felt a seat of the pants improvement, and it sounds better too, (ear candy, as I call it)and my rough idle in gear has been reduced alot, almost gone. It's a kit that you'll need to work with, and it beats designing one yourself. My suggestions to JL, get better directions, cut the cost a little bit.and it would appear that the tube lenght needs to be increased to reach below the bumper.I still like it.

I also have the JL Ram Air Kit. Your right it is a pain to install. But I like mine just fine. I have a review of my own in the v-6 section. I do think the tube needs to be longer and the price cut down a bit. other than that I like it just fine.

I read yours, what did it do for your idle? I got some rubber flex trim with the steel insert, and finished off the openings in the scoop area of the bumper as well as where I cut the inner fender, it really cleans it up nice. Today I got a fernco 3" plug and cut out the center to fit the flex hose tightly where it enters the airbox, worked great. I also used some aluminum sheet I had and fabricated sides around the scoop, to catch more air. I even installed the part I cut out of the valance to the top part of the opening, looks great.

My idle is about the same. no difference that I could tell.... I also use the Frenco plug, it just looks better than that orange flex hose. Well have you noticed any major improvements on gas milage or it beathing easier during hard acceleration?
