Exclamation

A modular engine is one that is so similar to another that they can be run down the same assembly line.

The 4.6, 5.4, and 6.8 are modular engines because they are all assembled on the same line. Very few of the parts are different between the three engines (ie, the V10 requires 2 more piston & rod assemblies than the V8, and slight differences in parts).

Having modular components lets FORD build engines on the same lines, (less cost to them since they purchase less machining/assembly systems). Since they share same components, they only tool up to make one piston rather than three different ones for example. Once again, it saves FORD money. Think how that must reduce the amount of service parts in inventory ! !

Believe me, these manufacturers will do ANYTHING to save money.

And you still hear of people with out of commission trucks waiting several weeks for parts on backorder. As you said, anything to save money!
