Question about Mobil 1.
Approximately two months ago, I switched from Castrol GTX 5W-30 to Mobil 1 mainly because of all the members here who use it and are satisfied with it. Anyway, I checked the oil dipstick this morning and after 2,200 miles of regular driving, the oil is totally black. I was very suprise to see that the oil was so black. I do not remember Castrol GTX being so black with only a few thousand miles. My question is, is this normal with Mobil 1? and has anyone here ever experienced this? Any replies will be appreciated. Thanks. Bugman.
I may be way off base here but it might be that the Mobil 1 has gotten all the sludge our of your engine left by all the dino oil. If you didnt use an engine flush and depending on your miles it will probably take one change cycle to get all the sludge out.
But like I said...I may be totally wrong. Just my thoughts.

Thats because Mobil 1 sucks. Mobil 1 is kind of like Fram Filters.. because everybody used them we thought they were good. But now we know better...They SUCK!! I used Mobil one for about 30,000 miles changeing every 3,000 and my oil was always VERY dirty. Then I switched to Amsoil and started changing every 6-7,000 miles and the oil was still clean when I drained it. Also my engine seemed to run smoother with the Amsoil. This is not scientific data .. just my observations. However in many wear tests that I have seen Mobil 1 did pretty poorly, even being beaten out by conventional oil in some cases. I now have a 2001 Mustang GT that I have broken in with Valvoline 5w20 for the past 6,000 miles and now it will be getting Amsoil 5w20... NO MOBIL 1 FOR MY BABY!!!!!!
I switched to Mobil 1 after about 19k miles. I changed it at 3000 miles since I didn't flush it the first time, and it was cleaner looking that the Penzoil I was using, although the Penzoil is a little darker. I'm at about 2000 since the second round with Mobil 1, and a Mobil 1 filter this time, and it's almost just a clear as it was when it went in.
I don't know what milage you've got but I'm sure it's just cleaning up. Do some searches and you'll find the top 2 choices are Amsoil and Mobil 1. And of course a good filter is a given. I'm an ex-Fram user, until I saw the light! First round of Mobil 1 when in with a Motorcraft filter, now Mobil 1 filters. Amsoil is probably rated higher than any, but Mobil 1, Amsoil and Purolator Pure 1 are the top 3. Amsoil ranks best when it comes to capacity though.
I'm sure you'll ignore any ridiculous comments that may get posted and can probably read right through them. RangerGuy can't decide what he uses. He has posts all over the place about his oil. Seems partial to Motorcraft and has interesting things to say about synthetics all together, although he does no how to spell Mobil

I've changed over 2 different vehicles to Mobil 1, in both cases it takes a few changes for it to flush all the sludge and crud out. On my wifes Miata, it had gone about 60k on dino oil before the change. I remember doing the cam cover gasket before Mobil 1 and thinking how dark and dirty everything looked in there. After about 50k of Mobil 1, the next time I changed the gasket it was nice and clean. It definately cleans up a motor given enough time. I increased the frequency of the first few changes just to get that stuff out. On vehicles where you start off new with it it stays pretty clean. I go 5k between changes normally. Mobil 1 is definately not the Fram oil filters of oil, I don't understand how that comparison was ever made. In my opinion it is well worth it.

I did not use an engine flush before switching over to Mobil 1 so, maybe that is the answer to why the engine oil was so dirty. I will try to change the engine oil this weekend and I will keep an eye the the oil color. Another thing that I noticed was that the engine hardly used any oil at all (Less than a quarter of a quart) as compared to a quart of Castrol GTX for the same amount of miles driven. Bugman.

Well Familyride I am not quite sure what you were trying to prove by posting links to my previous posts, but to clarify things for you I will give you a little history. First I have two vehicles, A 98 Ranger and a 2001 Mustang. When I first Bought my ranger I broke it in on conventional Motorcraft for 3,000 miles. At 3,000 I switched to Mobil 1 5w30. I continued to use the Mobil 1 until 30,000 miles changing every 3k with a Mobil 1 filter. My oil was always VERY dirty. After becoming discouraged that I did not feel the Mobil 1 was doing anything special I swithched back to conventional oil (Either Havoline or Motorcraft) and Motorcraft filters still changing at 3k. My oil was staying extremely clean between changes and my engine was quieter. In the meantime my Father started using Amsoil in his 99 Ranger. His oil was staying clean at 6k intervals and he also experienced a gas mileage increase. So at 41,000 I went back to synthetics, this time with Amsoil and Amsoil filter. My oil stayed clean, my gas milage went up from an average of 24 to 25.5, and my engine was as quiet as with the conventional. When I got my mustang Valvoline 5w20 was available so that is what I bought a case of to break in my motor with. But now with 6,000 miles I will be switching to Amsoil 5w20. So yes I have tried a few diferent oils, but it is this experience that I speak from. I thought that is what this message board was for, but now it seems that unless you are in the MOBIL 1 click your advice is no good. Your vehicle, your decision, but for me I would use conventional over Mobil 1.
I would be interested in your information about your increase in fuel economy. I think that 1.5 mpg from a different oil is remarkable. Please post this data if you have it avalible. Does amsoil promise a efficiency increase like you have seen?
When I get around to it, I am going to post a topic about fuel mileage, the things that affect it (probably too many to list), and how statistics plays a role in giving you a more accurate idea of where your fuel economy is going.

The bottom line is that Mobil 1 and Amsoil are both excellent oils. They are unquestionably better than conventional oils. It's for each individual to decide whether the additional cost is worth it to them.
I've kept a record of my fuel mileage in a spreadsheet from day one, and any change due to my using Mobil 1 will become apparent before the next oil change.
I'm using Amsoil ATF in the trans, and will be using Amsoil in the transfer case as well as the front and rear differentials.
My Jeep has Mobil 1 in the engine but an Amsoil oil filter, and Amsoil 75W-90 in the trans.
Go figure!!

I STARTED WITH MOBIL-1 AT 3000 ALSO,98 SUPERCAB 5.4.THAT WAS TWO YEARS AGO AND MY OIL IS DIRTY AS HELL AT 2000 MILES ALSO.ALSO STARTED USEING A HALF QUART AFTER 2000 MILES ARE LESS,NO OIL LEAKS,PISTON SLAP ARE DOOR CRACKS YET AT 29,000 MILES.I THINK THE OIL GETS DIRTY ON SHORT TRIPS TO WORK AND BACK,ABOUT 9 MILES ONE WAY.I DON'T LIKE NASTY LOOKING OIL EITHER.ALSO USES FORD OIL FILTER.
I can't say anything about mobil 1, I've never used it. I have used Valvoline Durablend 5W-30 and a Valvoline filter in my truck since the first oil change and I usaully go 5k between oil changes. The durablend is a synthetic blend that I have used for years. I have never had to add oil or had problems with the oil being dirty at 2200 miles. My truck currently has 56600 miles on it, it's been 2300 miles since my last change and my oil is still rather clean it has darkened slightly but still very close to what came out of the bottle. It still runs like new nice and smooth, no piston slap or rough idleing, after 3 years and 56000 miles I'll stick with Valvoline. Like I said I have never used mobil 1 but I thought it would interest you to see what kind of results I got out of my oil. Just my opinion. If you know some reason not to use valvoline and have documentation to back it I would be interested.

FWIW, (not that Ford is not a techilogical giant) I went to Germany 3 or 4 years ago
to work on an ad for Mobil one .The copy was "Every Porsche 911 Turbo leaves the factory with a case of Mobil one in the trunk". I got a tour of the factory and the guys there are as **** as every joke you've ever heard. White lab coats, not a drop of oil or a speck of dirt anywhere to be seen!!.
What I'm taking way too long to say is that from a design standpoint they leave NOTHING to chance ( and you pay for it )
and they use Mobile 1. And this was when the Turbos were still AIR COOLED!!
I've never used the stuff but I wouldn't doubt it for one second.
