RangerGuy, I don't know about your results or experience with Mobil 1, but I can assure you that it is, in no way shape or form the "fram" of motor oils. Use whatever motor oil that you want, but always remember that opinions are just like a**holes, everybody has one and many of them stink. Mobil 1 is a first class oil that is PROVEN, no ifs ands or buts....

I also noticed an increase of 1.5 miles per gallon of gasoline with the Mobil 1 oil. But, I wonder if it's the oil or the non-oxygenated gasoline??

Yep, it's the gas I just heard on CNBC today that the $3 gas prices were BS and the refineries have just finished switching over to the "summer" formulations.

I think you guys are missing the point. Oil being dirty at the change point is good - it means the dirt is not in the engine.

When high detergent (HD) oil first came out, everyone was in a panic because the new oil was much dirtier at change time than the old non HD oil.

There are lots of contaminants that cannot be captured in a filter. Just because it is dirty doesn't mean it is breaking down!

I have no experience with Amsoil, but Mobil 1 is a premium oil. I read somewhere that GM uses it on the Corvette specifically to avoid having to put an oil cooler on the car. This should tell you it is stable under high temperatures.

Mobil 1 oil is very good stuff...and no, it does not suck as others have posted. To say Mobil 1 oil is the "FRAM" of oils is irresponsible at best.

I did not quite say that Mobil 1 was the Fram of of oil. What I said was that since everybody else uses it people think it MUST be good, the same way that since Fram is the best selling oil filter people also asume they are good. I am sure Mobil 1 is not a bad oil. What I am trying to say is that it certainly is not the best. I believe that Amsoil is a far superior synthetic. I work at a Ford dealership and we recently had a guy in for a new engine in his Taurus with 80,000 miles on it. He had used mobil one since the first oil change, changing at 10,000 mile intervals. When the Techs took off the oil pan it was as dirty inside as an engine that was run on conventional oil. This particular taurus had the 3.0 Vulcan V-6 which has a reputation for being bulletproof. The Mechanics did not seem at all surprised that it was run on Mobil 1. They all agree that Mobil 1 is fine for 3,000 mile changes but would not attempt to run it ANY longer than 5,000. On the other hand Amsoil guarantees that if you have any oil related faliure while changing under there recomended one year or 35,000 mile intervals they will pay for the repairs to your engine.

speedy46, I use Valvoline SynPower 5w30, I too have not heard any negatives. I changed my oil last Saturday after 3300 miles. The oil was still clean and during that time I did not need to add any oil. My truck has 72000 miles and that was the first time I had used any synthetic oil. It's to early to tell if there is a gas mileage increase over conventional oils, but I will be monitoring it.

As you all know I am Amsoil all the way!

But, it would seem that Mobil 1 is the factory oil of choice for Corvette, Dodge Viper, Porsche and others. I would say that Mobil 1 would be my choice over just about any other brand.

Lastly, it does seem that Mobil 1 has recently changed their formulation and it does not do as well in the wear protection as it used to. I don't know why this is. I had heard that they started to blend some Group III basestocks--along the same lines as castrol syntec, so they could keep the prices low. But I can't confirm this.

Overall. I would say use any synthetic over a conventional oil anyday!!

Question

Always get a kick out of this debate. Will someone please enlighten me as to how you are measuring the actual performance of your motor oil ? And to those of you professional auto mechanics, When is the last time you saw a oil and oil filter related problem on a vehicle that has had regular oil changes ?

Hey Dondo, I've got one for you. I was recently in the service department of the local Ford. Someone had brought in a car because it the engine was really running rough and was having lots of problems. The car had about 35k miles on it.

A little while later the tech came into the service department to tell the service manager that the car still had the original factory oil filter on it...

This is laughable...I know mechanics that have looked into engines that have run Mobil 1 and they are clean enough to eat off of. Dino-oil on the other hand leaves a black sludge on everything.

I'm not doubting Amsoil is a good oil, but to say Mobil 1 leaves a sludge....LOL!!!

I've run Mobil 1 in my F-150 for 45,000 miles now. I currently have my engine torn down due to a leaking head-gasket and it is absolutely SPOTLESS on the inside. I am impressed with the cleanliness of the top end, including the valves which have very little build up on the stems. Typically dino-oils leave much more of a carbon build up on the intake valves.

I've changed the oil every 5,000 miles and used 5w-30. I'm not gonna use anything else. I have proof in the garage the stuff is a good oil and I can get it at any retailer nationwide.
