Post spark plugs

I know this is a dumb question, buti can't find the plugs on my truck, and that really confuses me.i know some cars don't have distributors, but what about spark plugs?
this is the first time i've really even looked at a fuel injected engine so don't think i don't have any knowledge about cars,i've just never seen this before.

i'm in the same boat as you are.my truck is in the shop getting a charger and i just found out i supposely don't have spark plug wires and my ignition coils are physically attached to the spark plugs--god i'm getting old -- esp when i don't know anything about trucks any more. lol--guess i'll have to relearn.

Tough to change your own plugs anymore. Plugs are buried in the heads. If you look under the injection rails, you'll see four round coils, which sit on top of the actual spark plugs from what I here. Was kinda dissapointed to find that out as I like to change my own plugs. Oh well, in theory you only need to change them every 100,000 kms or 60,000 miles for you Southern people.

I think it is actually 100,000 miles, but I could be wrong. I changed mine at @60k and they were shot, so maybe it is km???

Anyway, not a fun job. Took me four hours to change mine. I put in the Bosch + 4's to avoid having to worry about the gap. But I'm not too impressed with them. I am going back to the Motorcrafts next year.

To be honest, it took me some time to figure out where the darn things were too. You'd think that being on top, they'd be easier to get to...... They would, if not for the fuel injection rails!

Good Luck.

as soon as i get enough money i'm gettin a holley thunder charger too,all i have now is a k&n stock replacement and i was thinkin of gettin either bosch +4's or the titanium autolites.i've seen those coils on there but since everything i've ever seen, except for a cummins v-16 generator that's all backwards, has the spark plugs near the exhaust ports, and in the top of the heads on inline engines,i figured they were somethin else, guess i should've gone with my gut.i'm 17 and allready out of date, that's pretty bad, lol.

Can you give us the low down on changing the plugs? Did you remove the fuel rails? I need to change my plugs but have been avoiding it. Any special tools needed or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I didn't have to remove the fuel rails, but was really tempted!! Disconnect the battery. Take off the cover on the panel, next to the battery on the firewall and the one on top of the engine. You will need to remove the top bracket of the power steering resovoir too, it's just 3 small bolts.

If you have the 5.4, you will have to deal with the individual coils. That's the hardest part, because they have this little 7mm hex screw holding it to the manifold. As you may know, the whole manifold top is "open" and you can see down a good ways. Don't drop the little screw!! On the 4.6, it seems to be removing the plug wire itself that is really hard.

If you can get your hand on the coil, you're half way there. You will probably have to disconnect the connector to the fuel injector itself. Just pinch the ends and pull up. The wire to the coil should be removed too. This one is a bit more difficult because the clip is on the bottom of the connector. Once the coil is off, or the plug wire, you should blow or vaccum out the plug hole before removing the plug. Just in case some dirt and such found it's way down the hole. I used a Shop Vac with a 2 foot 5/8" rubber hose taped to the end. This was great for getting down there and sucking up the dirt. Next, you'll need some "special" tools. I used a plug socket that has a built in swivel (U-Joint). Then a mixture of 3" and 6" extensions and an additional swivel will really help too. A smaller then usual ratchet would help, but I didn't have one of those. Another tip is if you have a bunch of extensions hooked together, use duct tape to keep them all together, so they don't come apart. I also used an old plug wire to hand start the new plug in the head. I seated them so that I only had to give it a firm twist of the ratchet to tighten it. Finally, allow pleanty of time, have lots of patience, crank up the tunes, have a beer and enjoy, because you are working on your own rig and saving over $300.00 doing it yourself.

Good Luck!

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a weekend job. 300.00 vs. a little frustration and time, I think I will tackle this one.

Dunno for sure on the price. Just what I remember "hearing" from other posts..... But, can you be really "sure" they are changing all the plugs? Unless you are standing over their shoulder. Not saying that they wouldn't do it at all, but..... When I changed mine myself, I am 100% sure it was done and done right.
