Can I replace a V-6 with a 4.6L V-8?
I have a 99' F-150 with a 4.2L V-6 . My question is whether or not I can upgrade by putting in a 4.6L V-8? I also need to know what else I would have to change. -Thanks-
You can do it, but it will cost a bunch, not only the complete engine, but all the wiring and electronics are not the same, that too will have to be changed. Really more trouble than it's worth. Probably would be better off trading in on what you really want. Would definately be less of a headache.

Don't flame me on this because I'm a diehard Ford driver. I'm not impressed with the 4.6l in the truck. Slug comes to mind, I can only feel for you 4.2 guys on the power. My '99 Cobra on the other hand has lots of power, but that's another story.
If you want power, the 4.6 wont do it. Economy is a joke too. Best bet would be the 5.4l.
What Kjunman says is your best bet.
Good luck,
MK

I don't want to step on any toes, but the 4.6l is a very economical engine. I've got one in my pickup and the city mileage is not the greatest but on the highway it's very good for a full size pickup. It is actually very snappy forn a small V8. I drove both the 5.4 and the 4.6 and they "felt" about the same. If you are going to do any pulling however I would say that the 5.4 is the way to go. But if you want any economy I would go with the 4.6l.

Hi MKTRUCK
I have a 2001 f150 super cab 4.6, my truck weighs 6050 pounds stock and it`s no slug, and as far as economy goes i get 20 mpg on the highway averaging 70 mph. I think thats very good for a 3 ton slug. Would`nt you agree?.
Have a good day.

Hi Larry. I agree that's great. I only get 14 at 70mph and last week on a trip to Vegas I squeezed 17 at 75mph.
I don't know how you guy's get 20 but I'm glad for you.
Mine is a slug. I have a thousand pounds of tools and tool box in the back. My 5.0 liter did not have a problem with this set up.
Either it's the CA fuel again or you got a great truck.

Here is what i have done to my truck so far, some of these mods might help you as well.
Fist thing added was a k/n fipk, second was a 40 series flow master, third was an after market Y pipe, fourth was two electric cooling fans. I got home from a 240 mile trip today, stopped and got gas first, mileage worked out right at 20 mpg.I used cruise control as much as possible.
I hope some of these mods help you out.

The fans is the trick. I hear my fan clutch kick in almost asap. It appears to function properly but I bet this is it.
Do you have the numbers for the electric fans?
You can email me at emk113@aol.com or cumminsmandiesel@aol.com.
Thanks Larry. I never even pursued researching electric fans on this truck. But that must be the ticket.
Thanks again,

I got my electric fans from jeg`s.
The part #771-19124 they are 16 inch fans, i used two of them. I used a Derale adjustable temperature controller, part #16759. I did not get it from jeg`s i got it from a hot rod shop. Jeg`s does have one like the one i used part# 771-18905, it is adjustable from 160-210 degrees. it`s like the one i used.
If you realy want to gain more power and better gas mileage change the factory Y pipe. I got mine from jeg`s, it`s called a Y collector part#389-Y250300A it cost 37.99, it made a huge difference.
