4.6 Takes extra oil
I have over 56000 miles on my truck with a 4.6 2X4 Auto, I take it in to a local service center for my oil changes. It has always taken an odd amount of oil to show on the dipstick after an oil change, it is usually between 6.25 to 6.75 quarts, this last time it took 7.0 quarts just to hit the dipstick. The Engine dose not burn oil or leak and runs great, only noone can tell me if this is normal or how much oil the engine should take. Does anyone know for sure? I'm open to suggestions.

Depends on whether your changing the oil filter and what brand your using. Some are different sizes than others. I know on my 5.4 they told me x.x quarts. I used about 1/2 qt more to get right to the full mark.

I changed my own oil and filter @ 5M miles and put in the 6 quarts of oil. Ran the engine and checked the oil. It showed 1/2 way between add and full. Needed to add another 1/2 quart to get it to read full. My engine is the V-6. It doesn't use any oil either. Kind of drives me crazy that the published oil capacity does not bring the dipstick to the full level but that seems to be the case for many of us regardless of the engine.
Speedy46,
Any where between the hash marks is fine.
There is no longer a full mark. Because of the size of the oil pan you can easyly fit an extra ½ quart in and not see a change on the dip stick. Note when you change the oil and run the engine to test for leaks a fair amount of oil stays up in the heads. This might be why Ford uses the hash marks. The best method is to check it with the engine cold on a flat surface. If you fill it to the top of the hash marks the next time you check it and it is below the top line (because oil is still trapped in the heads) you might be tempted to fill it back up to the full line and this will over fill it.

My f150 4.6 does the samething. I change the oil, and in about 2 to 3 months i have found that the dip stick does not show any oil on it. and the engine light come on. so i guess that i'm not the only one having this problem. And i can't fine any oil no where on the motor, nor do i see any in the tail pipe. help
I had a 97 5.4 and a 98 4.6 and have always ended up putting in 7 qts to bring it full. I did this after checking the engines after letting them sit over nite.

frodman1,
I've always had the problem getting the oil on the dipstick after changing the oil however once I get it on the dipstick after the oil change it's fine. Whenever I check it there is oil exactly where it was after the oil change. my problem was that I thought it strange that the engine took varying amounts of oil to show on the dip stick. Sounds like from the replies I've received that this is normal for this truck.

Really? I have a `97 with the 4.6 automatic and she has about 107,000 miles, and I take 5 at the most. Always stays same level aferwards too, and I always change the filter every time I change the oil. I use Valvoline SynPower. Makes me feel like my truck's the oddball.
