Question Wrong Idle

My engine (5.4) idles at 4-500 rpm's sometimes. It should run at 6-700 rpm's to keep it running. Have anyone experienced the same problem? Seems like there is some type of switch that works sometimes to up the idle speed.
I would like to know if I can fix the problem without sending it to the dealer? $$$$$. If you know what I mean.

had a similar problem on my 97 4.6L xlt--get service manual(non-factory) at an auto parts store unless you know about the IAC(idle air control). carefully clean it and the throttle plate--NAPA/3m has a spray cleaner that is supposed to be ok for throttle bore/plate cleaning.

I have the same problem and its driving me nuts--check my last post-page 2 under engines>low idle-engine miss-you can see all the things i've tried-I put on a new EGR valve and coil pods-neather worked-I'm going to try a set of plug wires next but, it shouldn't be that(their new).

L, the IAC I believe is located behind the throttle body under the back wiper cowl. Is this correct? How did you get to this device without being a minature type person?
