Post WMS velocity tube

What does everyone think about the WMS velocity tube? Is the performance as good as the K&N FIPK or the AIRRAID or Air Force? Does it use the factory airbox and drop in K&N I already have? Please let me know which way to go. You can't beat the price on the WMS tube.

Thumbs up

I recently installed the WMS velocity tube in my 99 F150 with the 5.4. I am very impressed with it. You utilize the original air box and do away with the small restrictive tube that goes through the fender. It is replaced with a larger hose 3".
The installation was quick and very simple. I like that the air filter is protected from water. And I draw in cool air from outside. I choose to use paper replaceable filters. I had a K & N before and the engine oil became very dirty, therefore I felt the K & N was not doing a very good job of filtering so I discarded it and went back to the throw away filters. Hope this is helpful to you.

www.wmsracing.com makes them.. I have one, it is not cheap chintzy plastic, but a solid steel mandrel bent tube that replaces the accordion elbow. The MAF box is not dimantled, the stock conical air intake stays the same. The lousy and tiny fender-to-intake rubber piece of crap is replaced by a simple rubber hose piece that clamps onto the end of the air intake cone, and simply sticks into the fender hole. This piece, anyone could make themself for $3.99. However, the intake tube is very nice and professional. You are sucking cold outside air, not from under the hood like all of the other FIPK kits do.

I also have the WMS Velocity Tube, and have had it for about a year and a half. I'm very pleased with the product, it's performance, price, and ease of installation. This is a must have mod for the money! I honestly can't say how it measures up to the AirRaid, Air Force 1, of K&N intake mods, being as I don't that kind of money or time to buy all 4 and do test on the different products, but common sense dictates that the performance boost from all should be relatively close given the basic concept employed! The WMS Tube is definately the cheapest, which rates it above the others in my book! Enjoy, and let us know what you think!

I can vouch for the WMS velocity tube also. If your using your truck on any off-road conditions, inner fender air induction is a must.

GCOLE, the engine oil is completely unrelated to the air filter. The K&N is unquestionably better then the paper.

My WMS Velocity tube is for sale in the classifieds.

Being and mechanical engineer by trade, I think the WMS kit is a bit klunky. Sure it is 1/8" thick steel but it just doesn't make sense to make it that heavy when it just channels air into the intake. The transitions all have flow problems too - for example the intake tube is 3" alright but there is a little thing called vena-contracta on a re-entrant type entrance like that. That 3" inlet probably flows about the same as the 2.5" stock piece with the bell-shaped entrance. the inlet into the throttle body is stepped and that is no good also. Maybe I am just too particular but I am not impressed.

To tell you the truth, performance seems a touch better with my home-made kit and a K&N so I am sticking with that until my wife lets me get an airaid - or - I come up with a major brainstorm and can make something even better.

If you guys were to take the time to actually look inside the "restrictive" stock inlet tube, you would see that the accordian shape is only on the outside, the inside of the tube is smooth and plenty wide all the way through. The only real restriction in the inlet system is the neck-down into the fender. Pull the airbox out, take out the piece that goes into the fender (free), pop in a K&N if you feel like it, and you'll have all the gains that the expensive velocity tube setups give you.

How does the WMS Velocity Tube perform?

Low end?

Mid RPM or cruising speeds?

WOT?

Throttle response?

MPG?

How does it sound? Any unusual noises or whistles?

GCOLE,

I also have the K&N filter and I have noticed that my oil is very dirty too. I suspected the air filter, but I'm not ready to give up on it yet. I had a K&N in my '92 F-150 with a 4.9 straight six for about 100,000 miles, and the oil was as clean after 3,000 miles as it was when I poured it in.

'01blackF150 has a great idea and I actually did that for a while with good results. After looking at the intake on my wife's 4.6L mustang, I got to thinking about opening up the airbox. It took about 20 min with a hacksaw and a rasp. I took the silencer tube out of the elbow as well.

The bottom of the airbox is still there to keep the fan wash and water/snow away from the filter, and the mounting points on the bottom of the airbox were retained. I think this setup actually works better than my old Velocity Tube did. Sorry about the dirty engine!
