Actually, what you are seeing in the stock intake is not a smooth tube, but a gradually constricting silencer tube which narrows down only about 2" diameter! It is NOT "plenty wide"! Many guys that frequent this board actually have taken that sliencer tube right out! I did so as well, but then later I got my WMS tube anyways and replaced the whole stock piece. The claim is that with the silencer removed, there is a slight increase in air flow. I agree with you, however, that the major restriction is that piece of little crap rubber tube between the filter box and the fenderwall. That must go, regardless.

Opie-

The claims made by western Motorsports is that their tube has been proven by numbers to increase your power. Their testbed was a 97 4.6L. It consistently showed .5 seconds average better on 0-60 times versus the stock intake. That was with the new tube and K&N fliter. I researched it first, and went to Western Motorsports in Calgary AB to find out first. I have no reason to disbelieve them. I'm sure someone here will try to make a liar out of me, and somehow prove Western Motorsports wrong. At any rate, the WMS tube is about half the cost of any other FIPK kit out there, much easier to install, and much tougher (steel vs. plastic).

Howies_effie's claim that it is too "clunky" doesn't ring true to me. the whole setup looks much sharper and neater under my hood than that ugly black accordion tube. It takes up less overall space, and it is really not that much heavier in total weight versus the stock intake, that is pretty heavy plastic. half a pound heavier, perhaps.

Jim,

How about your own seat of the pants evaluation regarding performance and sound.
Thanks.

Well I called Wms yesterday and of course with my luck they are out of stock on the Velocity tube. It will be about 2 weeks before they get them in. I htink I will be going that route though. For the money you can't beat it.
Oh by the way, I ordered by Flip Chip yesterday as well. Thanks Mike!. Please hurry.
I will give an updated post when I get my chip installed and when the tube comes in.

I really wasn't sure what to expect when I first installed the tube. I also visually compared the two and found little differences, but looks can be deceiving. An extra 1/4" radius takes in a considerable amount more volume of air then you perceive. I've found the velocity tube definitely sounds alot different then the stock tube under WOT. At about 2000 to 2500rpm, it sounds not like a whistling or sucking noise, but more like a throaty *WHOAAAAAAAAA*. If you've ever replaced a 2bbl intake and carb with a 4bbl, you know what I mean. As for a gain in performance, I personally feel the most seat of the pants performance gain in cooler weather. I would definitely say there is a difference.

The two things that I disliked about the kit was for one I found that the tube is just a little long, having the tube installed onto the throttle body, at the airbox outlet end, the tube needs to slide into the rubber connector farther in, having a little lip all around the inlet, causing it to be restrictive. This can be adjusted to compensate if you know what to do though. And the other thing was packaging of the product. I went to the shop to see if they had got them in yet, and the tube was wrapped up, but had to gather all the rest in a box, which could have easily been missing important pieces. It could have been just because of the fact that I was a little over anxious to get it, and didn't give them enough time to properly package it all up, but a minor detail.
