Talking Air Intake Kit

Well I got my new air intake tube installed. It looks and sounds awesome!! But I have some questions for you out there. During the installation, there is a black box that sits off to the right of the Throttle body that connects with rubber hoses to the stock intake tube, and it hooks up to the intake manifold behind the throttle body. What exactly is that box and what does it do? I had to take it out.. and just hook up a straight hose from the intake to the new tube? Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated..

I'm pretty sure that it is only there to reduce noise from the intake system.
