5.4 engine problems - need help
My '99 5.4 is leaking oil from the passenger side head gasket. I heard about some problems in the milling of the blocks. Is this true? Can I get a new motor? IT has 30,125 miles on it.
I need some help soon. Just found out tonite, put on around 1,000 miles since I got the pickup and it is 1.5 quarts low on oil.

My 99 5.4 with 32,800+ miles also has the head gasket leak. Brought it in to the dealer they said that they had not seen but a few with oil leaks !!! They called me at work and said they could not find a oil leak just a power steeing leak. I explained to them on the phone again where it was leaking at. Another phone call from dealer telling me they will order two new heads, they arrived today I will bring truck in to dealer this monday. Suppose to take 2-3 days. I feel that I would rather try to repair it this way than installing a rebuilt motor. Since the rebuilt has failed previously otherwise it would not be a rebuilt and I do not know how well the rebuilder is. Hope it goes well with you.
P.s. Glad I purchased the extended warranty. Just in case this happens after the original warranty expires.

I've got it and mine started just after the warranty period (37,000 miles). Because of that I didn't do anything about it but I found someone else that got the leak after the warrenty period and Ford covered it. I've been corresponding with Ford about this (at over 40k now) and they did offer to assit in the matter and have requested I take the truck to the dealer. I'm taking it in tomorrow and I've got my fingers crossed that they cover it and get it fixed right. If they don't cover it, then I'm SOL, but instead of getting another Ford in around a month, I'm going Toyota Sequoia. I'll still keep the Expediton but won't get another Ford in the near future. Why should I get something when I know there's a defect? Shoot Ford has 2 TSB's on the passanger side head gasket leak for '99s. These 5.4's should automaticly get 100,000 miles engine warrenty, just like Ford is doing with their 3.8s from a few years back.
I have a 99 Expedition 5.4 L and it started leaking at about 40,000 miles (on the passenger side). I didn't know that this was somewhat of a common problem. How did you contact Ford about this? If enough of us complain, they might fix this for customer satisfaction purposes.
My 5.4 started leaking at about 23,000, and was verified at my dealer by the service manager. I was leaving for a 2 1/2 month vacation and wanted the truck. I was assured by the service manager that he would probably have to change the engine when I returned. He suggested that I call Ford Customer Service and complain when I got back home, which I did, without getting a warm feeling with the answers I got.
My service manager called his district rep. and a new (FQR) engine was on the floor of the dealership in one week. Due to a heavy load they couldn't get to my truck for another two weeks, which by now the mileage was approaching 28,000. I took the truck in on a Wednesday, at 8:00 AM. and picked it up on Friday, (of the same week) at 8:30 AM.
So far the remaned engine works good, sounds good and shows no loss of power or increased fuel consumtion.
Ford Customer Service did call my service manager after my call to them. GOOD LUCK!

My '99 5.4 had blown head gaskets at 35000 or so miles (still under waranty). I had the truck in for some other minor stuff I wanted to correct before the warranty expired and my dealer's service department found the leaks themselves(I had no idea) replaced the defective parts (under warranty) gave me a 2000 Taurus SE to drive (free of charge) and had the truck back under me in a day. *I have no complaints about FORD Service* I might have had a few problems with my truck, but they did right by me

dpyn,
I was given this website to email Ford about assistance http://www.customersupportctr.com .
It seems if you just call Ford Customer Service, you'll get the run around and the reps there act as if there were no problems on the '99s . It just happened that when I took mine into the dealer Ford asked me to take it in to, an old friend of mine works there as a engine specialist. When I asked him how common the problem is, he told me on the late model 98s and the 99s the oil leaks on the passanger side all the time and then showed me one that was sitting in the bay next to his getting a gasket replacement, which happened to be a '99. A couple other things he told me was that Ford did come out with a new gasket to fix the problem and once changed over he has not seen the oil leak come back. He also told me that if at all possible try and NOT to get an FQR motor because he has seen alot of them start burning oil after about 50000 miles. Oh the last thing he stated was the '99 was a really bad year for the 5.4 because of the leaking oil defect. Yep he stated defect.
I don't see how Ford can not cover this even after the 3/36 when the front line service people think that the head gaskets are defective.
Make sure you email Ford via the site and I think everyone with a '99 5.4 should go to the NHTSA website to file a complaint.
Good luck to all of us with the '99 5.4s.

Well, Ford said no recall no fix (unless I wanted to shell out $1500.00 for their defect!). Anyone else had better luck on the after warrenty repairs?
I had the same problem they replaced mine at 8,000, 21,000 and they were out again at 41,000 and they would not fix it I called Ford and they told me sorry but it was off the 3 year 36,000 miles. thank god i had leased it so I gave them the truck back about a month ago i recived a phone call from my dealer telling me that I owed them $1600.00 for the repair of the heads I told them to go to hell and i am not paying them a dime the guy asked me why I did not tell them that they were bad and I told him that they did not ask if there were any problems with the truck, he did not have much to say and told me that someone would be in touch with me it has been about a month and i have not herd from them yet what a joke.

Jeez, I get a sick stomach reading stuff like this -- especially since we're on a rebuilt 3.8 in the '95 Windstar for similar sophomoric problems.
Why can't Ford get something as simple as a head gasket right?!?
