How the heck do you get this lousy thing off?

Anyone know if there are any tricks for removing the fuel filter? I pulled at the fittings for about 30 minutes trying to get them loose... (and yes, I did undo the fastners) They would turn and slide a little ways, but it seemed that they kept getting hung up on something.

Any thoughts?

Not sure, but I think there's a special tool for those connectors.

You need the fuel filter removal tool to change it out on our trucks. The filter has a stop bead on each end that keeps the lines from coming loose. Those connectors your talked about are just a little extra insurance from the coming loose. The wrench is about ten bucks at any auto parts store. It opens like an x and you slide the wrench into the end of your line. The wrench covers up the stop bead so you can pull the line loose from the filter. Each end of the filter is a different size. They sometimes dont like to come loose, just be patient. When you get the tool or borrow it from someone, it might take ten to twenty minutes to do the swap.

Fuel Filter REmoval

You'll need a tool to remove it. They are at any part store. Look for them as round inserts with a slice so it wraps around the fuel line. It has a collar that goes into the coupler that releases the spring lock, then pull the line off.

Hope that helps,

Al

Use force

Not kidding, I have learned that sometimes you actually have the fitting loose, it is only extremely stiff to remove the line from the filter. They get dirt and road debris in there and it only complicates the matter. Be persistent you will win!

not trying to be a smarta$$...

Did you check out this how to ?

https://www.f150online.com/tech/fuelfilter.html

If you want more pics, I think the how to at the world has detailed pics on this procedure.

I want to say the tool size when you go looking for it is a 5/16" ??

Might want to find confirmation on that. That is just want I seem to recall it being.

the bad thing is if you pulled on the lines very hard, you have bent the barbs around , and the tool will no longer work. I always get these at work after people try to get them off theirselves, and then i have to cut the filter off with a hacksaw blade and pick the pieces out of the fittings. Last i heard they stopped providing us with the new barb inserts and the last couple ive done i either had to rob them out of a line, or try to repair the ones that got bent.

Anyway, i hope you didnt pull on them too hard.

Thumbs up

They can be a bear to get off. I spent over twenty minutes on one side the other just came right off. Left one huge blister on my thumb. I bought the plastic tool at VIP auto with the split put it on and the fun began. Thougth about quitting and just having the dealership do it. Hung in there and got it done. The clip that holds the filter in isn't very friendly either. Good luck
