Lifter Tick?
Hey everyone,
So when i start my truck after it has been off for a while, like in excess of 6 hrs, it seems as tho, before the oil reaches the top of the motor, I can hear some ticking going on. See the sig for truck details.
Is this common to everyone? Am i listening too much to the truck? Any input is always welcomed.
Cheers,
Bambino

Make sure you are using motorcroaft oil filters. Must have the anti drain back valve.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Does not sound like piston slap. I thought it might be the injectors clicking since they are pumping more fuel than normal owing to the engine being cold. Goes away after a few seconds.
I only use Motorcraft filters and 5W-30 Mobil 1 oil.

I have this same exact problem.
The ticking is worse the colder it is!
A few minutes later its gone, i thought it was the piston slap issue but my engine is a romeo and according to the TSB not one of the infected batches. So ive come to the conclusion that either its some other mechanical part or ford is lying their @#4ing a$$ off which i personally believe is true.
By the way i only use mobil 1 5w30 and Mobil 1 filters which also have the drainback valve.
My rig has 81k on it so no warranty for me lets pray if it is the piston slap how long she can lasT!

Some more info:
I have a buddy with a windsor 4.6 and it has slap, my truck definately does not have slap with it's romeo motor. The tick only lasts about 3-5 seconds when the motor is cold and the temps are above freezing. Today - about 10 degrees C, there was no tick, or very little.
I am using a FL820S with mobil 1 5w30. Oil level is perfect...
Thanks, and i'm looking forward all respsonse.

Just some more info, again...
today it was 10C and there was only about half a second of lifter tick. wondering what sort of climates other people are in when they are hearing the same symptoms.
Thanks

My guess. Valve in the filter isn't up to spec. See if it stops with your next oil/filter change.
My truck can sit for three days and it starts up quiet. No ticking.
Dealer does the servicing. No idea what kind of oil, but the filter is Motorcraft.

If you suspect sticky lifters, try some engine detergent like CD-2. There are at least two CD-2 products -- and one is as thick as STP -- the other, when shaken, sounds like a can of water (that's the one you want).
Years ago -- the product was called something like "Alamite CD-2" -- which was very thin and mostly of a solvent in nature. It worked within seconds (literally -- like 60 or 120) on lifters that were apparently sticking due to being 'gooey'.
The current product doesn't appear to be the same -- but I've seen it work in a few miles of driving on several vehicles in the past half-dozen years or so.
I suspect that Mobil 1 does NOT have a heavy dose of detergent -- inferred by referencing the 4. First Aid Measure portion of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) which reads: "INGESTION: Not expected to be a problem. However, if greater than 1/2 liter (pint) ingested, seek medical attention..." !!!
So -- if you can ingest up to ONE PINT of Mobil 1 10W-30 before seeking medical attention -- just how much in the way of additives can it contain?!? (Stay close to that toilet, though --
).
BTW: My friend's 5.3 1999 Z71 rattles like there's no oil in it for the first second or so upon start-up -- so oil-starved lifters is not a Ford-only 'feature'.

y2k,
Is that CD-2 stuff available at walmart, auto store, where??? is it just called CD-2?
I may be interested in using it. Is it something you drive around with for a while, or just let idle?
Oh, by the way, not to swell your head, but I joined this board in Febraury, and I have to say that you are the most informative, knowledgable, and helpful person I have seen so far. In the engine catagory and the transmission catagory. Thanks for all the help you have given me and everyone else. I did a search the other night of posts that you have replied to, or posted on, and I found a volumes of inforamtion. It was great.
Thanks again!
James

Hi new here great info on this site.Regarding lifter noise. U sure its lifters? I had same "noise" And it turned out to be the starter hanging up slightly. Only does it when its cold. Just an idea!

No swelled head -- but it DID make my day. Thank you.
I saw the CD-2 at Meijer last evening (after I posted it, I was out for a shopping stroll). It is in a bright yellow plastic bottle.
I had used Mobil 1 nearly exclusively for 130,000+ miles in my Excort -- and despite 3k oil changes, the lifters did get a bit sticky -- and one hammered like a champ for minutes upon start-up at times. The CD-2 worked for that engine -- a one-time shot -- and I've seen it work on several others.
With the super-clean operation/burning of today's engines, there is less importance placed on detergents and dispersants than for the 'dirty' leaded-fuel engines of a dozen years ago.
Since it's (CD-2) merely the detergent additive, you just add it and forget it.
My exposure to lubricants is admitedly not with engines, rather it is with transmissions and axles -- where I set up & managed the used-lube field sample program in use at Eaton/Dana for diagnosis & the establishment of an extended-drain interval program for fleets. I (and other team members) worked with the lube supplier which produces the additives and with the lube manufacturer that produces the Roadranger(TM) synthetic lubes -- which are used in Eaton and Dana products with lubricant change intervals of 500,000 miles -- more than 10-times what is allowable using dino-oils. It was Eaton who led the N.A. truck industry into the synthetic gear-lube arena -- and I was lucky to be a part of that development.
While my work was with gear-boxes -- I did pay attention to the engine oil advances - and use synthetics in every engine in my garage.
I enjoy adding technical, anecdotal, and humor-intentioned commentary to this board -- and LOVE my F-150!
Regards.

I'll chk out some cd-2 this weekend, and report if it does the trick. I'm not sure if this is a new problem, or if i just started to notice it, but i'm led to believe the former. This becuase my truck and I might just share the same heartbeat after all!
Thanks for the replies, I'll keep you posted.
