I tried the mothball trick and found it to be helpful. I picked up 50% in my MPG and about 218 extra HP.

I prefer to use magnets around the fuel line though. This helps to align the radioactive isotopes in the fuel and pre energizes the injectors. I have seen great results with this method. However it does not work well with mothballs. I guess the mothballs tend to counteract the magnets.

On a serious note, Tolulene is a valid octane booster and works well in forced induction engines. It does tend to soften throttle response though, not much of a factor in boosted apps. I would not use Home Depot grade tolulene though. Research grade is what one should use. I have used this with success in the past in my turbo Miata.

Thumbs up

...all of your joking about mothballs aside

Use Redline Fuel injector treatment. I'm not plugging for the company, just stating fact that I've witnessed in regard to this product.

I've posted before about this type of injector cleaner before. There are others on this board as well that can arrest to it. Do a search.

Folks go round -n- round about their poor gas mileage. Jeez, why don't you all just clean your injectors and quit crying. They get carboned up, you have no idea how bad...

Hell, there are probably other injector cleaners out there as well that do the same job; but I personally swear by Redline.

I use it every 10,000 miles. I gain a minimum of 4 mpg back when I treat my 5.4L with it. I'd treat it in shorter intervals but don't want to overmedicate my engine with the stuff. It's effective....

It's no bullsh*t guys (and gals).....

just do it

Talking

Ya know, with all this talk about putting moth ***** in your gas tank makes me think about recruiting the poor moths for an insect version of a boys' choir. With the original poster's apetite for moth *****, there should be a plentiful, ongoing supply of moth eunuchs to keep the project going for quite a while...

Simon and Theodore, move over...

Buzz and Bumper are flying through...

Just keep the stage lights down low, or we'll lose our performers.

The Guy who started this topic probably has stock in the parts business. Just trying to increase the demand for fuel pumps and the like.

Hey guys,
Not sure about the moth ball idea.

However, on high compression engines that have electronic ignition/fuel management systems with a knock senser, you will ALWAYS get better fuel mileage with higher octane fuel.

If you don't believe me I can show you back issues of AutoMotor&Sport Magazine (German).
High compression engines when run with 87 octane will run but the computer turns back the ignition timing relative to how much detonation the knock sensor is hearing.

If my 98 F150 4.6 has a knock sensor it doesn't work very well. Always pings slightly on 87 octane in high gear/low rpm on the hwy before it kicks down for a hill.

Hope to remedy that with new double platinum plugs, MSD wires (hope they have a direct fit kit soon).

Still, I wouldn't go stuffing moth ***** in my tank. Isn't it generally cheaper to buy premium gas than to add boosters?
