Stock Air Box
Anyone have a stock air box for a 2000/2001 f-150 5.4l? I have an idea I would like to try but it involves some cutting and I don't want to ruin the one I have. Just wondering for those who have installed Air Raid/KN/ Air Force One, I would buy it. Just curious.
Dang it, 1 day too late. I was just up in CS as of yesterday (watch my bro graduate the CSPD Academy + Mothers Day). If I'd known, I would have brought it with me.
I have one that will not go back on the truck, but it's for a '99 5.4L. I would imagine they didn't change, but I could be wrong. Let me know.

Hey Murfster,
If "ScottsCrew" doesn't respond, I'd like to buy your unused airbox myself. I HAD cut mine up doing a homemade mod awhiles back, and now want to replace it. Only need the 2 pieces that actually house the air filter element.

Damn, one day to late is right. Thats what I was planning to do. Wjt, did it not work or why do you need to replace it? I was going to remove most of the bottom on the side twards the fender. A little more cool air I would think.

ScottsCrew,
I had did the "economy" modification to my original. I had cut the main airbox housing all of the way open, leaving just enough of it to hold the K&N filter on to the base of it. In itself, it works fine.
Now I just want to completely re-enclose the K&N and just widen the tube that originally funnelled air into the housing. I've get my K&N wet with frequent engine washing, and now would rather have permanent protection around it, rather than a plastic bag each time I'm under the hood cleaning.
Ford doesn't sell the new airbox housing by itself, they want $187.00 for the entire air cleaner assembly, all the way to the throttle body.
...hence my search for just the airbox.

Did you notice any improvements (HP/Mileage) with the mod? I've got the K&N in the stock airbox now, better that stock, but looking for a little more. Plus would be nice to have the extra parts just in case has to go back to Dealer for work.

It's hard to say... definitely haven't seen or felt anything that detracts from the trucks feel and fuel usage. The biggest difference that I sensed was when I added the K&N. Truck was more responsive to the throttle after I did that.
Opening the air box would logically seem to be a good move in increasing air flow, but I believe that there is enough airflow in the inital stages of the stock setup of the airbox to negate that modification.
Certainly do so if you like, you won't hurt anything, and don't worry about taking your truck in to the dealer with that modification displayed in the engine compartment. I get nothing but compliments from my service writer when he checks out my truck with it's mods. Won't void warranty work one bit unless the mods contributed directly to a OEM part/assembly failure.
I don't really think that you're going to sense a performance increase from opening up the airbox. It may be better for the engine, but I think that it can get adequate air through the original housing area.
Definitely remove the "silencer" in the elbow though. Or better yet, get the Velocity tube and trash the factory OEM elbow. My engine just "sounds" better when I did that.
I know that it not very objective of me to say that, but if the engine seems to be running smoother and responds more crisply to the throttle after that modification, why not?
Now, ya gonna go after that airbox that Murfster has, or can I have it?

I don't care who get's the air-box. It's just sitting around collecting dust. I can package it in the box the KN FIPK came in. Again, it is off my '99 5.4, which, unless they made some changes, should fit 2000/01's.
Maybe I should auction it...

Murfster, don't want to start a bidding war here. Send me your email address. Mine is willtill@excite.com .
Nacho, I bought my velocity tube over a year ago from a company in Canada, Can't remember the name. Cost me $70.00, I think that it actually listed for $110.00 but thet forgot to send me some parts, so I got it with a rebate.

WJT, Have at the air box. I think I'll stick to the one I've got. What is this silencer deal I keep hearing about? I looked in the elbow and didn't see a thing. Where is it and how do you get it out?

Thanks ScottsCrew...
I imagine that your air intake elbow is not much different from mine on my '99 F150. There is another tube that is inside of the elbow. Many on this site have previously disassembled the stock elbow to get the tube out. What this does is open up the inside of the elbow to a wider circumference, allowing for more airflow. It's really jammed in there though....
I opted instead for the Velocity tube from WMS racing ("Hotrod1" provided the link in an above post) since it looked much more proper and provides a larger intake diameter to the throttle body. It works well, no leaks.
