Red face AIR FILTER FELL OFF !!

today I was washing my truck and I decided to wipe off some dust on my engine compartment when to my shock my air filter on my Air Force One was not connected. I have 10000miles on my 2001 4.6 and I dont know if it was off during my off road expedition. Now what should I worry about, what should I do?? anyone please help

That happend to me too, luckily I found it the day after I installed it. I think the pre oiled filter element gets the intake tube and the inside surface of the filter element real slippery and they need to be degreased before instalation. I also put a little racing tape on the intake tube to act as a better gripping surface where you tighten down the filter too. Only takes a strip of tape about 1 inch wide wraped around the intake tube where the filter will be mounted to. Guess every one who instals one of these needs to be double checking for the first few days to make sure they stay on. As far as should you be concerned I don't know. If you have been in dusty conditions I would definately do an oil change now and remove the intake and inspect the inside of the tube for grit and clean it out. That should give you a good idea as to what kind of stuff or amount was going into the intake. Inspect the throttle body to see if it has grit or grime on it and clean it also. Hope this helps, take care.

You know, mine did the same thing. It seems to happen occasionally w/ all of these aftermarket filters. I check mine every time I fill up.

I'm thinking about drilling a small screw into the filter to help secure it. Does anyone think that's a bad idea?

Add me to the list. It has happened to me 3 times. I can usually tell immediately, beacuse the car idles eradically. The RPM's jump up and down. It's pretty noticeable. I got an oil change and forgot about it. So far so good...knock on wood.

That is a good point, I do recall that I could tell that something was up. It did run funny at idle. So you would be able to tell if it came off without lifting the hood.
