My 97 4.6 was leaking there also, I noticed some coolant in the V of the motor, I could also smell it.Turned out it was the intake manifold gaskets,I guess this happens to quite a few of the early 97's. Mine was repaired at the dealer. Total cost 345.00. Not a cheap repair,alot of labor involved. This might be the case with yours.

Thanks for replying. I'm taking it back to the dealer on Thursday and I'll keep my fingers crossed. I'd love to be able to tackle it myself but honestly with the tools involved and time it would take, I'm better off taking it to the them.

 

My '97 F150 is leaking coolant from a pinhole below the the thermostat, on the manifold (just started yesterday). Has anyone encountered this? Engine is not burning coolant. Any suggestions? A Ford Mechanic (my brother's neighbor) says the engine is shot although he hasn't seen it; claim electralysis due to a garage putting wrong radiator fluid. Engine performance seems fine. Just passed CA Smog test 3 days ago.

 

I love my truck don't get me wrong but god another problem, maybe I should trade. Mine is an early 97, so far no leaks ( actaully no smells yet) (i will check for a leak). Hope it doesn't happen to me.
