Question 4.6 power

First of all, what a great resource, and it's
made that way by all you great folks. I've
had my 2001 F-150 4.6 auto for a couple of months, and am a proud GM defector!
1. I did a FIPK-ripoff mod on my airbox with
the K+N. Is hot air going to cause more
problems than it's worth? Should I make
a heatshield?
2. My truck was built 08/00. Does it have
the updated, 231 HP engine?
Thanks in advance!

LS, class III tow, alloys, prem. sound.
MODS: K+N with modded open intake.
40 series flowmaster (a bit loud, but
that's the point, heh heh heh...)

There is a member here that tested the underhood temps when running and idling,I think it was Neal? Anyway, the temps weren't too much higher than the outside air, unless you spent a long time idling,or it was a excessively hot day.
I think the difference was around five degrees give or take(when in average ambient temps)
I'm not sure about the beginning date for the higher horse engine, maybe someone else will step in that knows? ,,,,,98

Welcome Palerider

As far as your engine being the one with more ponies, all 2001 models have that motor. If you look in your VIN - the 10th digit (i think) should be a 1. That's for being a 2001 model truck.

Or you could just goose it and see how much rubber you can put down, and then tell how many HP you have

I have also done the rip-off mod. I only removed the airbox as described in the tech articles of this site. I have since gone back to the factory airbox with K&N filter drop in. When I switched back I did notice a slight increase of 2mpg over the exposed air filter. Not sure why. I left everything stock just removed the end of the air box exposing the airfilter. but hey, 2mpg is 2 mpg...especially at $2 per gallon!

The cooler the air you can suck in, the better. However, it may not be worth it or noticeable to build a heat shield that will decrease intake air by only 5 degrees. But, it may improve mpg by a small amount, which is still wirth it!
