Question Need Advice On Ext. Warrenty Purchase.

My 01 4.6L with 10,000 miles went in for blown head gaskets this weekend, and it just so happens that I got an extended warrenty offer in the mail from Ford on Sat. I've been considering keeping this truck, and going ahead with the warrenty, but I need a little information first.
- Where is the best place to get a warrenty from, as far as cost, and quality is concerned? Do they have a plan to make several payments?

- Is their any way I could re-finance my truck through Ford Credit, adding, a warrenty, and extending the term for a few months?

- Is now the time to get the warrenty or will I have another opportunity sometime down the road, closer to expiration of the factory warrenty?

- I'm mainly concerned with warrenty of the 5 speed tranny, and engine componets. Which plan is best for me, "Premium care" or "Extra Care"? Any not so obvious advantages to one or the other?

Thanks guys, for your time. I appreciate it a lot.

****I advise getting the ESP from your Ford dealer. Aftermarket warranties may leave you high and dry. They may cost less, but will usually have much higher deductions and may not cover anywhere near all the components as the Ford ESP does. Also, some aftermarket warranties charge a deduct per ITEM, while Ford's ESP charges just the $50 deduct per TRIP. So you save the minor things until you have something big to deal with then get it all done for just one $50 deduct.

*****Probably, talk to the financial guy at the dealership.

I think it may be cheaper to get it now. You can buy it anytime up to the expiration of the original but they can tack on a "high mileage" extra charge. By the way, there is some leeway on the cost of the plan. Be sure to ask if that's the lowest possible cost. You might call another dealer ahead of time to check its price but you should come out better at the dealer where you bought your truck.

***** I personally usually go with the full blown Premium Care plan. We tend to keep our vehicles six to seven years. I don't want major repairs during that time. Just major work on your A/C system will pay the whole premium. But there are lesser plans and I think there is one that just covers the major components: drive train. Talk to the guy and compare the plans and prices. It may be that a few extra couple hundred dollars will give you three more years of peace of mind.
Some members here will voice strong opinions against any type of extended warranty saying it is a waste of money. To me, it's like any other kind of insurance: it's a gamble. You might pay the $1000 bucks for an ESP and never once take it to the shop. Consider yourself blessed if this happens. But don't complain that you didn't get your money's worth out of it. I have been paying several hundred dollars a year for many years for life insurance but I never complain that my widow has not been able to make a claim on it!
Good Luck.

Go with the Extra. The Premium is $270 more and offers nothing to justify it. Get both brochures and compare items covered. 6 yr/100,000 about $1070.00 ------------------

Jackal,

I bought a WarrenTech warrenty with my first truck. I didn't do any homework on it so I got busted on the deal. The Finance Manager said look what I have!! A full 5 year, 100,000 mile, bumper to bumper warrenty incuding 4x4 for $2400!! About $1200 more than the Ford ESP. And Fords ESP is honored at ALL Ford, Lincoln, Mercury dealers world wide! Where as most other ones charge a an additional $50 if you don't go back to the dealer you bought it from.

The good thing is if you sell your truck, you get what is left over on the warrenty back in cash. Same goes for the Ford ESP in you decide not to sell it withthe truck. I just traded in my 99 and got back $1600 on the warrenty.

I checked with our Mercury dealer and the cost of a bumper to bumper 6 year, 100,000 warrenty for our 98 Mercury Sable is $650 spread out over the next 10 months. $65 per month for 10 months for an additonal 4 years of security is worth it as far as I'm concerned. And Ford's only stiputaltion on the ESP is that it's purchased before the end of the factory warrenty. No additonal charges if you wait till 35,999 miles.

You know what they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Sounds like a good deal! I paid $1135 for an ESP on my truck that gave me a total 72 month / 75k miles. Were your deals for five total years or five years on top of the original three years?

I'm going to keep Gene's phone number for next time!
