Question Is PROLONG Engine or other aditives good or bad?

Alright gentalmen, What do you think about Prolong or these other Engine additaves on the market today? I just put a K&N Air Filter in my '98 4.6L F-150 and also put a bottle of prolong in with my oil change and I could not believe the Increase in power I observed. You might say it is all from the K&N Air Filter but I have used prolong before and noticed an incese in HP. I would love to toy with this Compresed Air modification. The prolong comercial sayes they reduce the internal friction of the motor. Thus giving you more power to the drivetrain and so on. Some people say it dosen't do any thing for you but I think it does. Oh yea one more thing. Does prolong Make your Engin Temperature hotter or what? If the motor oil or the internal friction is reduced would it make the engin burn hotter. Speaking the Tech @ the dealership made me wonder what the limits one an put these FMC 4.6L Triton V8 Engin. I wan to suck every bit of Power out of the machine cuz I should have bought a 5.4 to begin with. Oh yea.. If the Engin burns hotter would I get more HP if I used 93+ Octane? Does the 4.6L engin have the Right compression to efectivly use the High Test Gasoline? I am just curious. Any Thoughts?

Oil additives don't work, and in some cases are bad for your engine.

Prolong contains clorinated parrifins, which over time break down and form hydrocloric acid. Thus eating the inside of your engine.

Most of those companies have been sued the FTC for false advertising you can read about it yourself and decide:

I,too, succumbed to the Prolong ads and tried it out...but quickly got rid of the stuff for the following reason. I bought the package where you get the can of spray lubricant (kinda like WD-40 but the similarity ends there). Anyway, I proceed to spray this lubricant on different things like hinges, locks, etc. I also have one of those "umbrella-type" clothes lines out back (to save energy!). The thing folds up to save space when not in use. It was sticking so I sprayed some of the Prolong lubricant on the sliding parts. About an hour later I went back to the clothes line and it had fallen on the ground! The Prolong had destroyed the black plastic parts and completely ruined the whole thing. For some reason, Prolong spray lubricant attacks black plastic (at least the kind found as structural parts on folding clothes lines). Because of this, I do not recommend Prolong products. Use at your own risk.

Almost every aftermarket "miracle additive" out there is little more than crappy oil. Do not add teflon additives to your engine- It takes very high temps to actually adhere to metal (much higher than your engine actually produces), and can gum up filters and small orifices in your engine, actually reducing oil flow and INCREASING friction!! And read the previous post regarding paffafins!! Some of these "miracle workers" claim to have run engines with only their additive and no oil! Absolute horse*****!! Would you try that on your beloved truck?

The best thing you can do to your engine to make the most power is to use a good synthetic oil, like Mobil, Amsoil, Red Line, etc. Do a regular oil and filter change, perhaps use some fuel system cleaner, like Chevron Techron, and perhaps a deposit remover just befoer oil change if your engine has lots of miles.

Dniles-

I was reading an aritcle in a drag magazine about guys who were tricking out their mustang 4.6 2v engines (basically exactly the same engine as in our trucks). He finally blew one up after running something like 12 psi++ boot, nitrous, with an almost stock bottom end. He probably ran it up to 700+ HP. The bottom line is that the Triton engines are VERY well built, and can handle more power than the old 5.0's and 5.8's (at least according to the article) with modifications.
