4.2 L V6 removal issue
4.2 L V6 removal issue
I would like to ask if anybody here has removed a 4.2 from a 97 for f150. I am currently helping a friend R&R his 4.2 but cannot seem to get it to seperate from the transmission. Has anyone else ever had this issue and or can someone tell me how many bolts hold the tran to the engine. I believe it is 7 or 8 I need to recount what I have out. It appears there is alot of corrosion on everything. We are in northern ohio but have not had very bad winters in a long time. Any help woulf be appreciated.
Thank You
Thank You
There are 8 bolts that mate the engine to the bellhousing. The ones on the top are pains to get to.
In addition, the starter needs to be removed. The four bolts that hold the flexplate to the torque converter need to be removed. Then there are 2 guide pins that yes can become pretty rusty so you will need to pry it away from the tranny most likely.
Been there done that more than once...:-)
E-Mail if you get stuck.

I have removed my trannsmission. There are 6 main tranny to engine bolts facing the rear... two on each side and two on the top. then there are two oil pan to tranny bolts that are facing the front of the truck.
To have good access to the two top bolts... place a jack under the harmonic balancer and jack it up just enough to drop the rear of the engine down exposing the two top bolts to a better degree.
If you click my photo gallery you will see some pictures of my 5-spd tranny when I took it out.
I hope this helps.

================================================== Now for the new problem, how in gods name do you get a cam sensor tool to install the cam sensor properly?

O.K. Umm a few questions are needed here.
Before you removed it did you put #1 at TDC and line up all your marks?
If so did you then mark the position of the Cam Sensor before removing it?
Is the timing cover off at this point?

I removed the cover from the old engine without knowing that I was going to need a special tool for this. So answer to number one is NO. On the new engine I have the engine at #1 TDC and the front cover is already installed. I have the cam sensor with oil pump dirve oiled and assembled and ready to drop in. What other info do you need? I was reading the service manual ind it states to install the cam sensor tool onto the drive unit and install so the cam snsor points 54 degrees from the center line of the engine. My problem is I have no cam sensor tool to do this. Is there a better way? GM you set the timing mark to the required time and turn sensor until you get a high voltage reading, lock it down and you are done. Is there some way to do this on these fords?
Thank You for the help so far. All else seems to be going together nicely though. I like the gasket and machined surfaces. Easy to clean and reassemble.
