5.4L noise

I've had the same problem with my 5.4L SuperCrew since I had it at 16,000 miles. It wasn't to noticable until I put on a K&N FIPK, JBA headers and Borla Exhaust. There was no change in the characteristics of the noise when I added the SuperChip with 92 Octane.

It sounds to me like a zip-tie hitting a fan but there is no damn zip-tie to be found! The sound is accentuated on the driver's side. Mine is constant but worse when cruising and lifting/pressing on the accelerator that doesn't require a downshift in the transmission. It's also worse on hot days.

I've taken it to the dealer who replaced the the EGR tube and valve asy, Cat Converter, Exhaust gasket to end up with NO resolve in the problem. They ended up saying that "some exhaust type noise is normal." I still don't think it's normal.

One thing that makes it difficult is for another person to understand the actual sound you are experiencing without being there. One thing you might want to check is the heat shield that covers the muffler. This has been a common problem on some of the Fords and Navigators. The weld will break loose and cause a rattling sound. A trip to the muffler shop and some welding will take care of it. I had this problem on my Navigator and would swear the sound was coming from the front of my vehicle and thought something was hitting against the fan. I eventually crawled under the vehicle where the muffler was and found it to be actually coming from there. Good luck, and hopefully you can find what your problem is.

It could also be the fan clutch. I have heard them make what I would catagorize as a ticking like sound. Haven't heard yours, but its a possibility.

Hey Dudley,

Well it sounds like we've got the same problem. I have been trying to solve this problem for about 6 months. I have been to the dealer and he too says it sounds normal. I don't buy it. I had a 1999 F-150 5.4 that did not do this and I have driven several other 5.4's that do not make this noise. I mean the truck is fine other than this. No other problems.
It's very hard to figure this one out. Sitting in the driveway I can't hear it. Only driving down the road when I'm on the gas. It's not very loud but I can hear it with the windows up and the radio turned down. I have looked at the heat shields and they look ok. It really does not sound like a rattle. It too airy. Just like you describe, kinda like you put a piece if paper in a fan or something. I only hear it when I'm on the gas. Let off the gas and it goes away. I don't know what to do next. I don't want to just live with it but this is the kind of thing that it's hard to get the dealers to diagnose.

DRC,

You're right on track. You don't hear it with the windows down. Put them up with the radio down and there it is.
It sounds like a zip-tie hitting the spokes of a bicycle rim almost.

Like I said, I've had the rt side exhaust gasket, cat convert asy, egr tube and valve asy replaced under warrantee. I'm still not satisfied either. I had a '97 5.4L without the noise and my buddy has the same truck except a different color without the noise.

Dvds,
Does your possible solution apply to those with an Auto Trans??
