Amzoil and Piston Slap
Well for months now I have been lerking on the boards here and found out about the piston slap issue. My dealer did not want to fix the problem since the truck is two years out of date and way over the mileage threshold.
I moved to Amzoil 0W30 and 95% of the slap is now gone or I can’t hear it now.
Before in cold weather I would get 30 or more seconds of the tapping sound, but now I only get one or two taps then it is gone. This makes me feel much better because I want to keep the truck for another 4 more years or so.

Well as much as I would like to chalk this one up to Amsoil I cant. Amsoil is an awesome product, in my opinion the very best on the market. Definetely a product I use and will use tried and true. If you really do have piston slap problems no oil can really remedy this problem. Piston slap in these trucks are due to the hypereurcractic materials used in the connecting rods. Oils has no effect on their contraction and retraction that causes piston slap in our rides. If you dont really have PS and notice a difference in engine noise in the mornings then YES you can thank Amsoil. Like I said before, with Amsoil you cant go wrong!

I have 14K on my 99 5.4 Expy. I think it is a later model engine, but have not checked the build date. At about 8K I noticed what I thought was a lifter tap when I started it up in the morning, long before I had heard about PS. I've used AMSOIL for 20 years. I changed over at 10K miles after I was sure the motor was broke in. No more noise. Call it what you want. I use 10-40 because I live in Fl. I will change the filter in June and the oil in Dec, just like I have for the last 2 decades. Last vehicle was an Explorer with 150K. Good stuff.
