Cool Just replaced # 4 coil pack

It was changed under warranty at 26,000 miles. Well she now has 39,500 and I had to change this one or pay $120.00 plus labor for a $38. part. Because they are only warrantied for 12,500 miles.

As you can see it was really messed up. The 5.4 in a F150 doesn't have any TSB's for it. I read somewhere that Expy's with 5.4 have a TSB for placement of a shield over # 4 coil pack. But Ford will not do a TSB for an Expy on a F150. Same engine same heater hose placement different vehicle from drivers door rear.
It will probably need done every 15-20,000 miles. I guess I'll get real quick doing it. This time was a real bear I lost the socket once and couldn't get the wire off the coil until I turned it over. And stupid me did it when the engine was still a little warm, the heater hoses over it are the cause of this problem and were still kinda warm. Ive heard the hoses weep a little under start up with the heater on.

What was your reason to have to replace this coil? Was it the engine idle miss that many of us have? Please email me a response, I am very curious... zeroxman1@aol.com

Cool

It would studder under acceleration. It is like you have a plug not firing. The last time it happened it was real bad but I caught it before it got that bad.

The #4 coil sits under a heater hose that leaks when the engine is underload. I had to replace it last month. The part cost me $96.00 from my local Ford dealer.

Cool

Ford places a shield over the coil in the Expy. Hose is directly over coil.

You should run two hose clamps on that heater hose, also check to make sure they are tight often. The rubber hose collapses a little and the clamp ends up loose. This is a very common problem and it is covered under the 3/36,000 mi warranty, at least we cover it.

This is the first time I heard of this problem with the 5.4L. How hard is it to replace the #4 coil. As all of you know there isn't much room in the 5.4L engine bay! Just like to know some more info on this problem. Thanks.

Question

Does this 'only' happen on the 5.4 engine?
If not, where on the 4.6 motor is the
number 4? I'd assume (well, you know...)
back right rear?
Thanks.

My father just had the same thing done on his
99 Expedition (5.4L). I couldn't believe it when he told me it was not running good. I went out and drove it and it was shuddering bad, and had lost a great deal of power. I thought of bad plug or two but not about the coil being bad. We took it in and had it fixed under the ESP Warranty at 38,000 miles. It seems like this shouldn't have happened with such low mileage. I will check tonight for the heat shield. I also don't think it still idles as good as it had before this happened.

Doc,
I believe the 4.6L V8 has only 2 coils instead of 1 for each cylinder. Someone else can possibly correct me if I am wrong... I replaced my plugs and wires on my 4.6L at 78,000 for the first time since new.

Cool

As far as I know only the 5.4 because the heater hose directly above the # 4. If you look on the passenger side of the intake cover I have 2 heater hoses there.

You can just see the coil connector at the very back of the picture.

As for replacing it is tight I lost the socket once, I taped it on after retrieving it after 15 minutes of trying. Hold the heater hoses out of the way. The injector connector needs to be unhooked to get to the screw holding the coil. The coil connector was a bear to disconnect until I turned it over and saw the way it was connected.
