Sounds familiar to me. I took my 93' F-150 5.0L in for a routine check up. I was told the throttle body was dirty and I had them clean it. When I drove it off the lot it ran like hell. I called the service writter back and told him. He said to bring it back the next morning. I did. I got a call at noon telling me the #2 piston was burned and I needed a new motor. Of course they claim it wasn't caused by them but I know for a fact they ran a can injector cleaner down the trottle body to clean it. Sometimes when they do this they overheat a piston.

I'm not getting very far with any of this but I'm also not letting up.

I have also heard of the #7 and #8 pistons cross firing (a design defect) and burning the pistons. This may be your case. Start with the DSB (dispute settlement board) and go from there.

Don't give up. Be a pest about it.

Good luck

Thomas

I have since brought my truck in to another motor shop and for almost half the cost I'm getting a new 5.0L with a 7 year warranty.

Thomas, I gaurantee they burned your pistons by using too much throttle body cleaner. Make sure they didn't damage your cat convertors too!!!!!!

the "cross firing" is not a design defect. It is a natural problem with ANY v-8 with plug wires. Ford, Dodge, Chevy ANY v-8.

Huh?

What does 7 and 8 have in common?

On the Chevy the firing order is 18436572 -- and I cannot see any relationship between numbers 7 and 8 -- other than they're on the same crank journal.

Splain it to me, Lucy.

Angry Blown Motor @ 85k

Anybody have any probs like this?
I own a 1997 F150, 85k, never pulled a load, mild off road (farmland), taken care of. Just finished a dealer tune-up, cruising home and pphhlooo, a little flutter in the pedal, slight loss of power, but made it home. No clatter, pinging, banging or screeching. I take it back to the dealer thinking I have a missing vac. hose.
40 lbs. of pressure in the 6 and 8 cyls. equals $3,200 for a new motor.
I've heard that this is a prob.
Dealer wouldn't help, Service Regional Rep is a bitch, she must think she can turn in unused comps for a bonus at the end of the year.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks for the chance to vent,
Melrose

The engine is the 4.6l.
The cylinders were 6 and 8, side by side, not opp. (7&8)
Thanks for all the replies...

So did they do anything else besides a compression check to diagnose the blown motor. Couldn't low compression in a couple cylinders be simply a blown head gasket? Especially since it's two adjacent cylinders.
Unless they can show you exactly what's wrong, I'd take it to a mechanic you trust and get a second opinion.
