how long do ford transmissions/engines typically last?

I would think as with anything you take care of it and it will take care of you. i had a 86 f-150 and sold it with 236,000 miles also a 78 gms with 362,000 miles on it.

I had a 85 f150 with the 5.0 and the AOD trans. that went well over 300K. Just change that oil and filter, do preventative maint. and take reasonable care of it. the ONLY parts on the engine or trans. that were replaced were the water pump( did timing chain and gears while I had it off at approx 130K), a fuel pressure regulator, a starter, an alternator and the valve cover gaskets. Point worth noting here is when I took off the valve cover gaskets at around 100K, there were NO deposits of any sort in them, just bare metal, not even any rust. I think thius speaks volumes about the quality of Mobil 1 motor oil. That truck had Mobil 1 in it since 2500 miles. I also changed the tranny fliud and filter on a fairly regular basis, at approx every 30K or so. Every other tranny oil change or at each 60K interval, I would totally drain the convertor. I would still have that truck today if that 20 year old female, who was yapping on her cell phone, didn't run that red light. She TOTALLED her 1996 Maxima and the guys 78 Grand Prix beside me. I drove my truck for a week until I could get it into the body shop, where, unfortunately, they discovered the frame rail bent under the radiator. When there is frame damage, its time to move on. I do miss that truck !!!!

Forever if you take care of them. Have the transmission flushed regularly. (just changing the fluid only gets a small amount out)
