Question Too much air or not enough fuel?

I have a 97' 4.6L V-8 with a K/N generation, Hypertech chip, true dual exhaust w/flowmasters. This is the problem. When I jump on it, it feels like it has more HP to give but shutters, like it's starving for fuel. Now i'm thinking, is that the problem,or is that to much air for a stock throttle body to handle. Like to much of one an not enough of the other.I've been told to go bigger on the throttle body and mass air. Then I here different from somebody else. I'm hoping somebody could shed some light on this. I need imput like Johnny 5. Thanx.

If it feels like it has more power then it doesn't need fuel or air. Probably something in the rear end or tranny. I have the k&n gen. 2 fipk, superchip and true dual with a 18" glasspack on each pipe with 2¼ pipe.

Future mods: Supercharger, headers, NOS, tranny upgrade(heavy duty gears, clutch packs, etc.), performance torque converter, composite driveshaft, bore cylinders 30 over, new pistons, crank, and rods, get performance heads or port the ones I have, gauges for the a-pillar, new L if they still make them and I like the way it looks, and a Z06 Vette or BMW Z3.

Question

I am having the same problem. When I jump on it, it surges for a half second and then gives out. It's like it's saying "LETS GO....or wait, mabye, let me think about it."
I am starting to lean towards fuel deliverly problems or the TPS, which I'm going to check this weekend. It's frustrating because I've just about done everything to the damn motor short of new headers and such and still can't get my 0-60 under 13 seconds and the durn thing acts like i didn't change anything. Anyway..lemme know what you find. Mabye make Johnny 5 ALIVE!

Oh BTW, if you race your truck allot or just have a lead foot and want to make sure you are running the proper air-fuel mixture, you can purchase a autometer air/fuel misture guage. You can buy them from summitracing for like $30. They are very easy to install, 1 wire to O2 sensor, 1 power, and 1 ground (preferably ECU ground). This way you can monitor your engine at all loads and rpms to make sure it doesn't run lean. A little rich is ok but lean will cause serious failure, especially if one day you decide to supercharge your truck. Also the air/fuel gauge adds a nice "racecar" like look to your interior.

i thought the computer was supposed to take air & fuel flow all into consideration when creating the mix, so that it cannot run too lean or to rich..

i thought that could only happen on carburated engines..

Yes the computer will control the mixture but if a part malfunctions such as the Throttle position sensor or fuel pump, the computer cannot do its job. So the only reason to have an air/fuel mixture ratio is to verify nothing is broken or misadjusted in the electrical system. Also if you plan on adding a supercharger or other aftermarket parts which require some adjusting to obtain higher fuel pressures or boost, it is good to have the air/fuel mixture not only to verify everything is working but to adjust to your running conditions.

Whoever says a 4.6 needs a bigger TB with just those mods needs to have the cranium checked, people run blowers with the stock TB without problems, I'll put $10 on the fuel filter.

Of course, fuel filter. Why do I always forget about the simple things??? Anyway change your fuel filter if that doesn't do it, check your codes.

To me it sounds like a fuel related problem. The couple mods you have will increase flow through the engine so I highly doubt it is unsuccessfully sucking in air but rather getting too much air and not enough fuel (ie not enough fuel). You may want to consider a higher rate set of injectors as your next mod. I believe Neil is going through a complete fuel system rebuild on his truck this summer. You may want to try to get ahold of him and ask his opinion.

If it is fuel related, you are currently running lean and will cause serious harm to the engine. If you know how to check your computer codes I would do so, if not take it to the dealer and pay them $50 or whatever to run the codes and make sure you don't have a bad throttle position sensor, air flow sensor, fuel pump, etc. Running lean will detonate your engine and possibly burn up your pistons, etc. You don't want that!
