Oil Brand & Fuel Mileage
I know this is going to sound very strange, but here goes. I was running full synthetic Mobil-1 motor oil and then I switched back to regular Havoline motor oil; well I swear that I am now getting better gas mileage. I'm I just imagining things? The Havoline oil has printed on its label, "New Formula Improved Gas Mileage". Just curious what others thought or have experience with. I haven't taken any readings or anything, it just seems that I can go farther on 15 dollars than I used to.
Thanks ...

Havoline has started to use some group II and III basestocks. It should give better gas mileage over the old stuff, but not better than mobil 1, which has even better synthetic base stocks.
I think gas mileage has more to do with how and where you drive. I just filled up today. and got around 13 miles per gallon, but I did a majority of in town driving!!!

F-150XLT, I know this isn't a real controlled study, but I saw the same.
2000 XL 4.6 V8 5spd, started off w/ mobil 1. Used almost a quart of oil between changes, every 3000 miles. Mileage averaged 14/18. Switched to Castrol GTX at 15K miles. Engine is not consuming as much, probably 1/2 quart every change, and getting 14/19. Only really noticed an improvement on the highway. I've got records of all gas fill-ups.
Go figure. Perhaps there was a slower "break-in" w/ the mobil 1? I don't know, I used to think the synthetic was, ahem, worth it, but I'm back to my old dino oil w/ my 3K mile habit.

Synthetic is a waste!!! When I was running Mobil 1 My oil was DIRTY every 3,000 miles. I switched to Motorcraft 5w30 and my oil was still gold at 3,000 miles and my gas mileage also improved. Also my engine seemed to run quieter with the conventional oil.
Rangerguy:
referring to the statement with the BOLD letters above i have this to say.

RangerGuy, you do realize that if your oil is still golden after 3,000 miles that is doing a very poor job of removing carbon deposits and dirt from you lubrication system don't you? I would much rather see the deposit in my oil, that means they aren't still in the engine.
Many people forget the oil works as a lubricant, coolant, and cleaner.
