Nice Performance Mod
Could anyone tell me in thier own experience what is the best performace mod for a 4.6?? I have a few things done but want another 20HP or so is this possible with bolt on stuff?? How do the pullys Work??
HI!... REGALMAN : Go with a SUPERCHIP. It gives you about 25H.P on your 4.6 and will take you less than 30 minutes to install. These trucks really respond to "BOLT ONS". I've picked up about 70-80h.p with simple mods. Read my SIG below.

I would definitely go with the Superchip for the most bang-for-the-buck.
Elmo, how's that head swap coming along? I'm anxious to hear how it goes and what kind of improvements it is going to make. Be sure to keep us all posted!

I like the K&N filter best. Gave me about 1 mpg in the city and highway. That was on my old 98 supercab 4x2 with a 4.6.
After that I would look into a cat-back exhaust system.
Why do so many people like the chip mods? It seems you would lose money on it due to having to use higher octane gas.

deep6blue- The Chip gives approx. twice the HP per $$ of the FIPK and cat-back. The computer is the first place to add HP on a computer controlled vehicle. To get the added performance (performance was the initial question), the high octane gas is worth it.

regalman,
In response to the pulley question, they are a no brainer. They simply reduce drag and will work on just about any vehicle. I've seen tests with little 4 bangers picking up 5-6 HP and V-8s seem to average 12-15 HP.
Dollar for dollar, probably one of the best mods you can do.

So, if I went ahead and got the underdrive pulleys, would I be able to swap them myself? I am good at mechanics but, do I need any "special" tool to do this?

If you go with the underdrive pulleys will this affect the charging system. It seems there were some discussions on this a while back. I plan on getting these but should I leave the alternator pulley stock. Thanks

Yes, you need a special tool to get the crank pulley off. i got the ASP underdrive pulleys and like them very well. Seems to wind up a little faster.

Have any of you actually done a before and after dyno run on your Superchipped 4.6 or 5.4? Your truck will be quicker with the chip, mostly because of the transmission calibrations they perform (line pressure, torque converter lock up, shift point RPM). The chip itself will gain a max of 4-8 rwhp, that's it. I sell them, I install them, and I dyno them. Don't give me the eddy current dyno bit, all things being equal, the Dynojet dyno is the MOST accurate MOST repeatable dyno out there. You will see relative differencees, if you have more power from the chip, it the dyno will show you. I would not tune fuel and spark tables on an inertia dyno, but I will use it to see differences in mods. Why do 29 Nascar Teams use it?......hmmmm Superchips diesel programs DO put the advertised HP to the ground, but naturally aspirated gas engines w/ a Superchip, or any other chip, will only get you about a 3% RWHP gain. They are worth the money for the tranny features alone, any extra REAL power is a blessing. Not a flame, just my experience, and that includes 300+ dyno runs, mostly late model fuel injected Fords. I couldn't remain quiet, the dollar per rwhp ratio is what I know best. In fact, a pulley kit MAY (depending on the vehicle) produce more rwhp than a chip.

HI!... ha,ha,ha,ha 8RWHP!!! All I know is that my truck dropped 6.3 tenths in my 1/4 mile times. 16.01 to 15.38. That was done on the same day, same track, same weather conditions. To be very honest with you guys, I never noticed anything different with my tranny shifting when I installed the SUPERCHIP. That's why I installed a BAUMANN ENGINEERING shift kit later on.

Some food for thought with the numbers below. This 5.4 actually lost 5 rwhp when all was said an done. Hard to sell something when the tools you use to justify them tell the truth! BTW - some Dynojet owners fudge the correction factor by entering false values (dry bulb / wet bulb), the later WinPEP software doesn't allow you to do this (I use WinPEP) I'm glad you picked up 6 tenths, that works out to be about 60 HP doesn't it, come on Neal. Any Ford chip can alter your transmisson parameters, and most Superchip's programs do. With your increased power from other supporting mods, your chip calibration coud have used a little more tranny work (add'n custom charge from Superchips). Get your 340HP (estimated) truck to a dyno, most likely you'll find it to be about 210-218 rwhp tops. Not a flame here, I always value your input and dedication to your F150.
