Question v6-v8 swap

Has anyone tried this? I have 97 that I bought new. It has got 107K Miles and is almost paid for. It is a 5 speed w/ the 4.2. I have taken very good care of this truck. People do not believe me when I tell em' its 5 years old and has so many miles. I was thinking about going with a 4.6 after its paid for. I heard that the swap is easy. Just wanted some opinions.

ChuckM, those are the exact questions I have. I have heard that the 4.6 will bolt right up to the transmission. The computer would probably be straight forward. But, the motor mounts is another question. Not sure about that one.

ponysix8- Still got that Mustang? I would go for the 5.4. But, I would have to change the transmission.

I am dropping at Windsor 351 or a Jasper 350 in mine when it quits. Not anytime soon.

kirby,

The 4.6 will bolt right up to the tranny.
The motor mounts might be a problem. The clutch plate is the same but the fly wheel might be different. You will need a new computer and engine bay wire harness. For the price of a crate 4.6 or a re-man the computer and harness you should be able to get a supercharger. This would make installation easier.

LOL! Yes, I know JMC. It will cost me. But, at 107K and going, I think I'll pass on the SC on the 6.

I say rebuild and supercharge. The 4.6 just isn't much tougher than the 4.2 unless you are an extended cab. Sorry, i can't help on what you asked but I can say i've ridden in both and the 4.2 IS faster. I can smoke a 4.6 standard cab but not a 4.2 until we get to high speeds.

I'm looking for the same info. My engine just went to the grave with 87,000 and I don't want aother v6. Are the motor mounts the same. I am sure I would need the 4.6 computer. Are the harnesses the same or would I have to replace that too. Exhaust?

personally, when my v6 bites the dust I'm either getting the L 5.4 or navigator 5.4, whichever I can afford or find at the time.

Onebad,
You smoke 4.6 regular cabs with a supercrew ORP Automatic??? This I have to see... Given, I probably ran a 16.3 1/4 stock, but with the usual mods I was more like high 15.6s. You must tell me your secret...

Kirby,
I still have the stang.

I wonder how much cost and trouble it would be to convert our trucks (2wd) to Awd. I would think that you could just swap w/ an expedition.

That's what I thought when I did it. The truck was a 97 ORP, i know they are the least amount of power of the 4.6 but still a lot less weight than i'm pushing. He has only done a airbox delete and exhuast. The 4.2 doesn't have much either, 5 speed w/ a airaid. Trust me it was close off the line but it was getting ugly when I let off.
