Post Question about the 5.8.......

I'm new to the board but not to Fords!!
But....I have an 86 & 89 Bronco II so the fullsize thing is new to me.
Was the 351w offered with EFI?
I'm going to buy an 85 F-150 to pull my 4x4 to the trails but I would rather have the EFI for mileage and other reasons.
If so.. I can just change the intakes and add the computer, wiring, fuel pump and any necessary sensors right!?
If this gets to be a bigger problem than it's worth(or VERY costly) I'll just swap to a 5.0 since parts are easier to get a hold of. And Summit is about 25 minutes from my house so that will help too!
Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Rick

fordtec, you sure about that?

I know the 5.8L didn't come out with FI until 1988 'cause my '87 came with a 4bbl carb. The 5.0L in '87 had FI.

My 88 F250 5.8 was a fuelly. Didn't the redesign happen for 87? I know the 86 had the 4 bbl and the 88 5.8 had way more power (but it was a gas hog).

ps - Still have the factory 1988 truck shop manuals. Anyone interested?

I'm almost 100% sure that when Ford converted over to F.I., they started with the smaller engines. In 1987, the 351 and 460 blocks still had carbs. F.I., didn't come in on those engines until 1988. I remember being disappointed that I couldn't wait another year to buy an '88 instead of an '87. My cousin was also in the same situation when he bought his F-350 CrewCab in '87. His 460 had a carb too.

Yes, the engines back then were gas HOGS. I got between 8 and 10 mpg and was refueling both tanks every week. My cousin towed a horse trailer and had to stop every 200 miles to refuel his tanks on one particular trip from Kentucky to California. Of course, he was towing around 12,000 lbs at the time (two horses, portable coral, hay, feed, water, and two cast iron stoves).
