HOW MANY MILES??
I WAS CURIOUS TO SEE WHO HAD THE MOST MILES ON A 4.6 TRITON ENGINE.
I HAVE A '97 EXTENDED CAB WITH 130,000 MILES AND RUNNING LIKE IT WAS NEW.
ANYONE ELSE HAVE A GOOD HIGH MILES STORY?

Sitting at 122,000 now (need to update my sig), running like a top. Still doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil, and the engine has never been touched for anything other than regular maintinence.
I think Bent6 is over 200k by now - highest I know of who posts on the board directly, but there are plenty of stories out there!

My brother in law has a 96 4.6 4wd with something like 150,000 miles on it. Been a good motor so far. Had to replace the clutch recently and regularly expected accessory failures. But other than that, smooth as silk.
Gopher is correct. My truck has 204,000 miles on the odometer. It had oversized tires when I bought it with 164,000 miles 2 years ago. So, in actuality may have more like 210-215,000 miles(thanks to this site I have corrected the speedo). It still runs great. But does have a wrist pin or piston slap noise when it is cold out for the first 20-30 seconds after I start it cold. It uses 1-2 quarts of oil every 5000 miles. Only real problem were bearings in the alternator and in the diff. I'm looking for 300,000 before any major work.

WOW..BENT6..that is encouraging. I read somewhere that the engine was designed from the start to do 200,000+
The ONLY thing I have had to do in 130,000 was change the oil. No leaks, no oil use between oil changes. I was really pleasantly shocked at how good it runs. I drove it cross country with 110,000 with no problems.
I would like to get to 300,000 just to say I did it.

BHF,
The truck was owned by a local electrical union. It was driven by a near retirement widower who had something to do with their training program. They regularly sent him to Georgia and Alabama ( he always drove straight through, and told me this was the third truck he did this to ). The truck was in service for almost exactly 2 years( works out to be 240 miles a day!) before I got it.
When he retired, they gave him the truck. He traded it in on a new Chevy at the dealership where my brother in law works as a sales man. I just happened to call him to see what he had on the wholesale lot, and he said he had a 97 Ford. I though it would cost way too much. He said they had $7500 into it, and when I asked if I could get it for $8000 he thought so. I paid $8200 which was about $8000 less than a low mileage loaded XLT would have cost me back then. After two years, regardless of what happens from here on out, I feel it was a super deal.

My Co. vehicle (1997 F-150 S/C w/ 4.6L Windsor) has 161,000 miles. It runs as good as the day We took delivery ( 5 years-next month).
This 4.6L has a "cold" piston slap; since 37,000 miles. This vehicle gets worked hard & see's 6,000 to 8,000 miles between oil changes.
Truck has had one tune-up @ 102,000 miles. It has had tires & frt. brakes replaced @ 73,000 & 146,000 miles. Lower ball joints replaced @ 73,000 mi. Trans. sensors seem to me are the only trouble. Sensors replaced @ approx. 123,000 miles.
Our employer has had Gm & Mopar vehicles--no other brand has equaled (or came close to) the service We get out of this F-150.

speaking for the 4.6.. or local sheriff's office keeps all the cars well over 100k.. usually they get rid of them around 200K, and I can guarantee that no one is harder on an engine than a cop! WE have had exactly three failures in their engines:
1. "city shop" forgot oil.... not exactly the engine's fault.
2. oil cooler failure, engine still ran but developed a knock.
3. 150k mile engine tossed a rod on HEAVY acceleration. (this is the same car that goes thru a set of Eagles in 10-15k miles)
Longevity is definitely NOT a problem with the 4.6

very cool stuff, I don't exactly fit in here with my 97 5.4 but I have 104,000 on it and it has the cold start slap, it scares me to hear it and I don't know when it started because I just bought the truck. Your stories are encouraging. My buddy at work here has probably around 185,000 on his 4.6 he boasts gas mileage of 22 mpg highway and has had no problems with the engine.
