An observation
Sorry, i know, but just had to jump in on this one.
Had 3 Ford Trucks, currently 99SC.
BUT:
Hard to keep up with all the "irratic" stuff Ford is producing. Whats one to believe?
Some get the right radiator, some dont?
Some get a larger engine oil pan, some dont?
Some get piston slap, some dont?
Some get FQR engines, some dont?
Some get screwed and some dont?
All of a sudden, lighter weight oils are all the rage with Ford, etc. What gives??
Wished i could remember where i read how hard Ford (top dogs) worked to convince their engineers that lighter weight oils were best. I think theres more to this. On light oil, better MPG, etc? Emissions? (CAFE) I dont know?
Or, do these Triton (modulars) work best on lighter oil? You do know, there is no real long term track record on these motors. Hope
there right!
Of course, in super cold climates, lighter oils, well thats a no brainer.
but these 0 wt. oils in hot weather??????
I use what Ford specs. are, but i have trouble with it. Dont like arguments,(when i know i could be wrong) so if i have an engine problem, (under warranty) aint gonna be because i used a wrong wt. oil!
For me, dont know if im going to stay with Ford. But, alternatives??
Sorry, "Just dont get it" Thanks OT

Oh, I remember what the thread was about, oils, not capacity! I totally agree, no 0w in the summer, but 5w? That's still low. I too thought the lighter weight would dirty faster during break-in, but I guess not with the extra large pan and the very tight tolerances. I think thinner oil will enduce piston slap more so than thicker oil, unless the tolerances are again very tight. Does anyone know of a test on these thin oils and the outcome? Hard use and milage versus oil viscocity breakdown?
Hey King James, was thinkin the same thing-
BUT still gonna wait to i find out why Ford specs. 5/30 for my 99 SC. Ford said why sometime back, but cant remember. It might a been when they first made tritons?
Seems specs. for 98 had a sliding scale, certain wts. for certain temperatures.
Times are a changin. Thanks OT

FORD MOTOR COMPANY NOW RECOMMENDS SAE 5W-30 VISCOSITY GRADE FOR SERVICING ANY FORD GASOLINE-POWERED VEHICLE REGARDLESS OF MODEL YEAR.
Use any oil that you wish but I will stick with 5W30 regardless of outside temp. I have run in the Dunes in 90°+ with 5W30 and no engine problems. Bet you that we will see a TSB with 5W20 one of these days

I use Amsoil 0W-30 (Series 2000). Daytime temps are 80F-90F all year round. Never had a problem with Amsoil yet in over 12 years. My only complaint is that it's expensive.
Oil capacity with filter = 6 qts

Hey Badd Andy
Well, what do you think so far? Your post is really starting to take off!
JMC Tks. for info. Now Ford "recommends" 5/30 in all engines. OK Sure glad i wasnt useing 5/30 in my F250 HD with 460.
Gah; Yeah, heard "Amsoil" was good stuff. Curious, how many years have you been useing 0/30 in your 5.4L "Triton"
Ummmmmmmm?? Again i say, sure hope FORD is right.
Have a good one. OT

We are dealing with multi grade oils and 0W30,5W30 and 5w20 are better for winter start ups, as we all know. But, did you know, the first number specifies the cold start weight of your oil and the second number specifies what the weight of your oil is when your engine is at running tempature. Also, some engine manufactures will show a graph showing what weight of oil is best at different ambient tempatures. In the summer I run 10w40 in the wifes vehicle because that weight of oil is best for warmer weather. Wonder why car manufactures don't include a break down of what engine oil is best at the ambient tempature your running. When I saw 5w20 as the manufactures recommended oil I thought, man, that can't be healthy in areas of the country where outside tempatures can reach 100 degrees, daily.
Call me CraZy but i just have a bad feeling ford wanted to use 5w-20 just to try and hide the piston slap.. I fear the piston slap has and is in ALL trucks, just some dont show it enough to notice.

i'm not sure that I understand what the problem is in finding the 5w-20 oil..
my dad just bought a '01 mercury, and told me that he need to find the 5w-20 oil..
Wal-Mart has Motorcraft 5w-20 oil for $1.26/qt, and then I went to Pep Boys and found Pennzoil 5w-20 oil for $1.69/qt..
Where are people looking when they say that they cannot find 5w-20??

This 01 owners manual is the first I've seen that does not have the temp scale for oil weights. Most of you guys have brought up good points that are in my mind too. Also, now thanks to Dateline I know how weak our bumpers are! At least there's no doubt about that!
OK, this pic is from the owner's manual. It is for ALL engines as you can see. 6 quarts *with* filter it is.
