Exclamation An observation

I checked my oil level on my 2001 5.4 at 3,000 miles and damned if it still looks new. I would have thought that with the 5w-20 that it would have gotten alot darker than it is. I wonder if that 7 quart capacity or a long breakin has anything to do with this. I was gonna go with 10w-30 feeling that -20 was too thin for a hauling truck, but now?

First off, if Ford finds out you're using a weight of oil that's not spec'd by them, they can and will void your engine warranty. Second, your engine will probably be noisy in the mornings when you start up your engine. It's too thick to come up to pressure like the thinner oils can.

Ugh, 5w-20 is the stock oil weight. Last years truck was a 5w or 10w-30 specified oil.

Thumbs up

Yep, stick with what it requires.

Hmm, I've never gotten more than 6 quarts in my 5.4 with an oil and filter change. And I just bought a couple of Mobil 1 filters and they're even slightly smaller than the Fram's I used to use and the Motorcraft I have on it now.

Do we all agree now that the "2001" 5.4 uses 7 quarts of 5w-20? If so, Uh Oh, what was the original question in my 1st post?

4.6 liter 1997-- got my oil changed today at a ford dealership. I give them the mobil 1 oil 7 quarts and mobil 1 oil filter. they do the work. They told me because I
have a oil cooler, It takes 7 quarts. It costs me $10.30 for them to do the messy work. when it gets warmer out i change my own oil but lately all it does is rain and I don't like to change the oil in the rain. because of it getting warmer out I went back to 5w30 weight oil. In the winter I was using 0w30 mobil 1 oil. kmart had the mobil 1 on sale this week for 4.00 quart.

I recall a thread not long ago about oil changes. Bottom line is 4.6/5.4 use 6 qt. The oil should be half between the full & add marks. An engine oil cooler may add a quart but my remote filter does not. Too much oil will drag on the crankshaft & loose some power.

I have a 97 4.6 and no where in the owners manual does it say 7 quarts. They hold 6 quarts with the filter change. My oil is right at the top of the stick.

BTW, my 97 4.6 takes 6 quarts. Best thing to do is call the dealer and find out from them. It might look clean because the engine is new and it doesn't have all the crappy build up in it yet.

Go to the dealer? Your funny! Is that the guy that takes your money, says nothing's wrong and pisses you guys off? I thought they were the guys who just sold me my vehicles. Please read into this, those that have these problems with them!
I've owned 9 cars and trucks, 8 motorcycles, a camper and a few trailers, and never have I taken anything in except for warranty work, tires, and I've never had a problem I couldn't deal with myself. No one but me touches my vehicles! My owners manual says 7 quarts, but I'll really know when "I" change it.I'm one of those guys who believes what's written until proven different by myself while "heeding" the warnings of others. Whew! That felt good!

The 5.4 takes about 7l, the 4.6 takes about 6 - thats to bring right near the full mark. Use the oil wich is specified, the new engines are updated and there are only certain ones that still use 5w-30 but only use 5w-20 if it is specified for your vehicle - ford is running on tests to see if they can be used on previous engines but as of now only use what is specified. I would not be so hard on dealerships they are the ones that know your vehicles and I find gennerally the people who complain about dealerships the most are the ones who are calling for free info on how to fix their trucks when off warrenty, the thing you must realize is that the techs you are talking to are not being paid while they speak with you.

My '97 took 7 quarts, although all the service literature, my dealer, said 6, we did a little investigating back then and some '97 5.4's had a 7 quart pan, others had a six, but there were a lot of trucks shipped that year that took 7 even though the owners manuals and capacity charts said 6 from the factory with filter. I finally called the Windsor plant directly to get an answer on that one, we kept coming up short on the first oil change and got to checking into it. I thought I either I had a 7 pan or the wrong dipstick from the factory.

My '99 5.4 took 6 with a cooler and motrocraft filter, and my 2001 5.4 takes 6 with an oil cooler and FL820S filter.

As for 5w20 oil, the dealers in this area are using 5w30 motorcraft just like in the past, because they cant get or dont stock 5w20, its also almost impossible to find in the store unless you are running 0w30 synthetic. The thinner oils may flow faster and help eliviate that old piston slap and lube the upper end faster, but as for holding up in a 100 degree summer in Alabama, I dont think 20w oil cuts it, I dont see anyone else recommending it, even the Toyotas and Hondas with cammers are using 5w30 and 10w30. And my first oil change from the dealer a couple days ago was 5w30, it wont hurt a thing.

As for warranty, dont let them bully you with that, I have not met a tech yet who can look at a bucket of used motor oil and tell me what grade it is, muchless in a motor that has come apart.
