Lightbulb Chip Install and a UPS rant

<rant>
So here I am, somewhat peeved that my local UPS driver is such an idiot that he clearly disregards the agreement I made for them to drop off all packages at the front office.

What is being delivered you ask? Why, my Superchip of course.

So they say "We'll deliver it Monday". Yanno, if I wanted it on MONDAY I would not have forked the cash over for overnight delivery.

So, I get to go at 9pm tonight and pick up my packages from the delivery center.
</rant>

<question>
How difficult is it to install the chip and what all must be done? I assume these directions may/may not be included with the package so I thought I'd ask.
</question>

Hey Caelistis2!

I am by no means a gearhead, greasemonkey, bolt bugger...nothin' like that. I change my oil and that's about as far as it goes.

I installed my Superchip (Flip Chip)in just over an hour. And with the 4x4 off road package, I had to take out by battery and its bracket which added up to 15-20 minutes to the job.

Bottom line, if I could do it, I'm thinking anybody can!

Oh, and it smokes!

* Sliding Rear Window * 6-Way Power Seat
* Remote Keyless Entry
* Lund Trident Bug Shield * Custom Exhaust
* Fumoto Oil Drain Plug Valve (a must for do-it-yourselfers!)
* Wise Bedrug

So many mods, so little cash! On the up side, no wife to create a filibuster.

If you got it from Mike Troyer the instructions are great. Read them first if you're not sure how it's done. It'll help to have a good idea first.

It's really easy. 2 things to watch for, clean the contacts good, but not so much you're removing metal. Just take your time and look closely; you can see the coating that need to come off. Next, be sure when you put the computer back in, the bracket doesn't rest against the Superchip. It could push the chip far enough off to cause no-start. You should only need to bend the tab on the bracket back a little. You'll know what I mean when you see it. I pulled my bracket out and flattened it smooth, but that was **** and over-board.

Good luck.

Caelistis2,

I agree with FamilyRide -- be sure to take your time and clean the contacts extremely well. Mike T's instructions do an excellent job explaining this. I actually used a four step process (1) using a small flat head screwdriver, gently scrape the coating off of the contacts (2) use a pencil eraser to go over the contacts and get any additional small particles (3) using rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip, clean the contacts (4) check to see if the contacts are "completely" clean by scraping with the screwdriver again under a bright light. If there is any coating left (white shavings) repeat the process again. Continue to do this until there is no more shavings. Finish the process with a final pass with the Q-tip (in alcohol). Taking your time here will ensure you only have to do this once.

My final recommendation is to remove the battery and tray. I tried to do it initially without removing these and had a fair amount of trouble (and frustration) attempting to reach the nut. Removing the battery and tray will add about 15 minutes to the process, however, it will save a few degrees of blood pressure

The entire process took me about 1 hour.

Good luck!

Caelistis2,
It sounds as though you were expecting a Saturday delivery (??). If so, UPS doesn't make Saturday/ Sunday deliveries. Don't blame your courier - - they're great guys ... especially, given they are working for UPS. BTW, FedEx (Express) does deliver to certain areas on Sat/ Sun (large metropolitan areas) at a considerable surcharge. It's the same old story - - you get what you pay for; and ... if you want it on time ... send it FedEx .... just my (bias) $.02.

UPS is the great Satan, incompetent and evil to boot. I once had a package delivered COD, for which I paid by money order. They then lost it, and then came after me for the money with a collection agency despite a clear record of having already received it. I was able to get the money order replaced at my own time & expense, but if the lost one ever showed up and was cashed I'd owe money for the duplicate to the post office and would undoubtedly have to sue to recover it... I used to think it was a great company, but I would never voluntarily do business with them after that... if I'd paid cash we surely would have been in court...

How'd this get off onto UPS? He posted on Friday when the package didn't get delivered where he expected it too.

So, on to that install, how did/is it going?

Signmaster;
You're right. UPS now delivers on Saturdays ... must be trying to keep up with us (FedEx). I guess they'll try to match our Sunday service next.

Hey guys, I have installed many chips and it is easy. I'd love to help but I'm an idoit UPS driver. UPS has been delivering on Saturdays for a long long time. I dont know the just of the situations that you might have had with UPS, but 90% of the time it a communication problem between customer, driver and UPS management. As far as FedEx goes, please. UPS delivers more volume than any other service provider in the world. AS far as Sunday goes, I hope we never offer that service. The most positive aspect of UPS is the fact that we have the HIGHEST paid employe's in the industry. UPS drivers starting pay is the current FedEx TOP pay. There IS a reason for that. I hope your next UPS experiance is a plesant one. Peace!

All right. The chip install went very well, all things considered (that being extreme amounts of rain and wind).

The only concern I have is about the white goop that covered the contacts. Mine was very.....fluid, for lack of a better word. It came off very easily with a warm, damp cotton towel. The contacts were beautifully clean and silver. Ran a finger across and found nada but solid metal.

Popped the chip in and she started just fine after putting the ECM, battery tray and battery back in.
