What exactly does a screen windage tray do and how does it free up horsepower? I saw an add claiming that it can free up 32 horsepower on a 4.6/5.4 Mustang.

It's so the crank doesn't beat up the oil
Or the oil doesn't hit the crank and slow
it down

 

The basic theory is that oil slings off the crank,and splashes into the oil in the pan. Some of the oil splashes back up into the crankshaft,slowing it down. The windage tray stops the oil as it slings off,and it drains back into the pan without the splash back. Crankshaft scrapers do pretty much the same thing,by catching the oil before it slings off into the pan.
I have heard they do actually improve the HP output quite a bit,but not sure if they can free up as much as 32 HP. It could be possible,though,,,,,,,98
