Question Did Chevy offer a 5speed manual behind the 350 in 96 or at anytime?

I am assuming they didn't because looking on thier site you can't get a 5speed manual behind the 5.3 in a half ton that is. I am basing on the premise that neither ford or dodge offer the 5speed behind 5.4 or 5.9. I have a friend whose brother claims he has a 96 Silverado with a 350 and a 5speed, and I don't believe him. Now if it was installed aftermarket then that is different, but my argument is that it is not availiable from the factory.

Yes. It was manufactured & called a "getrag". GM designation was HM-290. I believe it was used in production (behind 5.7L, 350), starting in 1987 or 1988. This transmission (in my opinion is a piece of garbage). If you own the 1st. production design--good luck if you need parts. Parts will be almost extinct & very high priced if you find them. Caution: this transmission need "special" assembly fixtures to reassemble. If you don't know what you are doing (stay away from this transmission--like it has the plague).
The newer version of this transmission is called NVT-3500. Manufactured by New Venture Gear.

LOL!!, I guess roasted would be healthier right? Well when I see the guy again I'll tell him that his uncle or whoever he is has the 350 5speed and that I was wrong. I never saw the truck, we were just talking about it. I'll back it up with my assumption was based on the current trucks, and not the 88-98 design

< I think it stinks that nowadays none of the major brands offer manual trannies with their big V8 motors in a half-ton model. I wish somebody could tell me why this is.>

The SD trannies are REAL HD truck units, unlike the wimpy one that comes with the F150. That unit halves the tow rating, and by all indicatios, is also quite a bit less than durable. With GM offering the Allison 5 speed automatic on their HD lines, I wonder when Ford will do something comparable with the Powerstroke.

The real explanation is that the HD truck manual trannies are rather miserable to live with, especially in traffic (high clutch effort, long shift throws, relatively clunky action, relatively noisy straight gears), and most LD buyers have lost the inclination and in many cases, even the ability to do the 3 pedal mambo. And even with a granny 1st, the manual is a handfull trying to get a heavy boat up the ramp; the automatics make the task much easier, especially considering that we only get a foot operated parking brake.

Interestingly enough, the manual tranny in the SD Diesel gets you an extra 25 HP and a few hudred more revs. Sort of opposite of the F150 way of doing things.

LHM,
I'm almost positive they offered the 350/5sp combo in '96. I had a '95 Silverado Extended cab C1500 2WD with a 350 and 5sp. Had to hunt a long time to find it, too. I actually have a sales brochure from '96 that says it was available. The biggest change in Chevy from '95 to '96 was the Vortec upgrades (wish I'd have known about that before I bought my '95; my 350 had 200HP, the Vortec 350 had 250HP). A 250HP 350 with a stick would be a hoot. Alas, my Silverado got traded for the truck you see in my sig in March of '96. I wish Ford had been a year earlier on that one, also. My Chevy just didn't have the power I thought I paid for; the main reason was the 3.08 rear end. I never even checked the rear end when I bought it. Got great mileage out of it, though, about 21 mpg on the highway. It was only turning 2000 rpm at 75.
I think it stinks that nowadays none of the major brands offer manual trannies with their big V8 motors in a half-ton model. I wish somebody could tell me why this is. Ford will put a stick behind a 5.4 in a SuperDuty; why not an F150?
But to answer your question, yes, it probably is a 5 speed, and if it's a '96, it's a Vortec 350. Pop the hood and see if the info sticker says 5.7.

Smile A 5 speed manual was offered on some 1996 silverados

I purchased new and still own a 2WD extended cab with the 350 mated to a 5 speed manual. with the tall (locking) rear end (I think 3.43). 5th gear @ 65mph = 2200 rpm. I believe the tranny would only be mated to work trucks or those with the 1SC package (cloth split bench seat) in 2WD trim only. I have 400,000 miles on mine now. Clutch replaced once at 150,000. Yes it is a one-eyed man in a green suit but I love it. Still tow 6000lbs on occasion. At 65mph gets 18-20 unloaded, 14 towing 6000 lbs.

...and yes I've had the typical fuel pump issues (I think I'm on #5) and intake manifold gasket (3rd). But the engine uses only a 1/4 quart in 4000 miles unloaded - 3/4 quart in 4000 when towing (lot more 4th gear & 3000 rpm).

Very neat!

Got any pictures?!

I got a 2000 Dodge Dakota mated to a 4.7l V8 and a NV3500 5 speed manual, with a 9.25" 3.92 L/S axle.

Talk about a tire roaster... I can put it in first, and roll, then just give it some gas and apply the service brake.... she'll start burning rubber at ~2500 rpms.... the torque is so much fun!

Fun little truck.

My 94 K1500 I ordered with a 350/ 5speed/3.73 's....ran great. Replace clutch (due to linkage) @ 33k....sold truck with 287K miles....would still bark 2nd and 3rd ... Chevy did NOT offer 4.11 gears with the small block...you had to order the 454 to get 4.11's....

1996 Silverado 2500HD 350 V8 5 SPD Vortex

I own one has towing pkg 8 lugs and LWB with brake booster, badass truck my opinion. 144k miles nothing wrong but regular maintenance. It does exist and it's one of a kind.

so it’s a half ton? a straight up one of none...

I’m so glad you bumped a Chevrolet thread from 2001 to show the world paying attention is not a positive trait on your side of the interwebs

back in 2001, when this thread was posted

the OP was asking about half tons, not 3/4 or tonners...
