"Intake Manifolds" are coated with oil
I'm sure it looks so oily because of the PCV and EGR systems, but I can't see how this would be good for air flow. The upper intake manifold is just as bad.

While I was looking at this, I started to think about how my exhaust pipes have always been black from running a little rich. Since the air is measured before entering the manifold, is it possible that the oil coating the manifolds is slowing the air down enough to cause a rich running condition???
I'm curious to know what everyone thinks about the oily coating. I was really disappointed when I removed the upper intake and noticed how filthy everything is.

Normal be dammmm
Hey guys now you got to be kidding because if it was normal Ford would be out of business or still trying to sell Edsels or changing there name to Studibaker!! We have posted some info on this is the Supercharger forum check it out.. Later
you are right
How many miles have you put on the motor? From what I understand it is the EGR that causes this.It really is normal to see that oily film on higher mileage 4.2s.The bad news is that it does rob hp when its built up enough.I had the same stuff (not nearly as much though) on my y2k 4.2 that I traded off.I heard that the more time you spend at wot the more this film will build up (I don't know if its true or not).Don't feel alone, the v6 mustang guys have this exact same problem. It is an inherent design flaw and we get to live with it......
.It is possible to clean this crap off, but eventually it will just come right back.
Cobrahms99,
Forced induction just speeds up the process on the 4.2.Xanman did some kind of EGR mod to remedy it but he didn't post details.
AjRagno,
It would be a good idea to ask Crash down in the supercharger forum how to do the egr mod(&show him your pics) on the 4.2.He probably will know what to do.
Good Luck

This is not only a problem with the 4.2. My 4.6 is drawing a good amount of oil since the Magnacharger. There was some before but it's increased.
I believe that the solution is crank case breathers. I think the breathers require a special tune on the chip.
Ford may concider it normal but I would rather not have oil it there!

i have a 5.4 with the same oil in the elbow behind the t/b,it's been there since i first put on my k&n which was around 34,000,that was the first time i took off the intake,i figured it was there when it was installed for some reason
